The University of North Dakota lost to the University of Alberta last
night by a score of 2 to 1 in overtime. In what turned out to be a game
without any long streaks of momentum for either team, Alberta improves to
9-1 while UND drops its first game of the year.
The first goal was scored in the latter stages of the first as
UND's Tom Philium make a nice deek to catch the Alberta goalie leaning
the wrong way. No one scored in the second, but with around 15 minutes
to go in the third, Alberta scored on UND freshman goalie Aaron
Schweitzer.
The game then went into overtime, and Alberta scored the game
winner with one second left as the puck was deflected off of Schweitzer's
stick into the net.

Comments:
Regular UND goalie Kvalevog was forced to sit out (actually for
the next 18 days) due to a problem with NCAA eligibility. Aaron Vickar
played in the first and looked very sharp (in fact he has been touted as
the most consisten UND goalie at the moment). In the second, Travis
Pavlat stopped all 7 shots leveled at him. He appeard to be much shaper
then last season. In the final period, the highly anticipated Schweitzer
stepped in, and had some very nice saves. However, with both of the
goals being scored on him, it will be interesting to see how his
confidence is in the next game.
UND did not covert on any of its power plays. Most of the
powerplays had 2-3 shots on the net.
Rebounds were fairly plentiful, but the Sioux were never able to
capitalize on them. There were at least two occasions where UND had an
"empty" net and they could not score.
Goaltending at UND is going to be a sore spot now. The Sioux are
going to drop one goalie, but after last night, it will be hard to get
rid of anyone. The big question is whether or not Blais would start
anyone beside Kvalevog.

Hopefully this game is not a precurser to the rest of the
season; Denver is up here next weekend.
