"Blatent" isn't in the rule book. If a player is checked from behind within
two feet of the boards it is a major penalty. The rule and its current
enforcement is very clear. The unusual thing about this situation (I cannot
recall a 5-on-3 for greater than four minutes because of consecutive major
penalties) is that Tech committed the same infraction 42 seconds later.
That was remarkable! Both hits were clear violations of the rule. There was
no mistaking it based on replay.
And you are absolutely right Pam. Shep is the Badgers' favorite referee :)
At least this Badger has that opinion. Greg "Let 'em play" Shepherd is the
WCHA's best. There was a time in the late '80s and early '90s when the
Badgers had an obscene winning record when Shep was the ref. But alas, I
don't think if Sauer himself had officiated UW's games so far this season
that our record would be much different.
Here's to Bucky's newfound winning ways (I hope).
