Summary:

We finally won one!!!

This was the 3rd game this year that ended 5-4 on a goal in the last
seconds to end the game with Michigan. The UIC Flames once again played
the Wolverines even. This time, however, they came out on top.

This game was dominated in the first few minuets by Michigan as the
continual 4 on 4 play was to Michigan's advantage. Finally UIC scored at
13:13 of the first period on the power play. This was only the 2nd shot
on goal of the game for UIC. Overall for the first period UIC was 2/5 in
goal/shots on goal.

During the first intermission UIC Goalie Adam Lord was not feeling well
with the flu and was given the night off. He was replaced by Paul Spencer
who lead the Flames for the rest of the evening. Michigan gave him a rude
awakening 1:11 later as they retook the lead 3-2 on Harold Schock's 1st
goal of the year. Warren Luhning finished the 2nd period scoring on the
power play with his 3rd goal and 4th point of the evening. During the 2nd
period, once again UIC scored 2 goals on 5 shots on gaol.

In the third period, Graff pocketed his whistle and the game rapidly
became very chippy as more and more overlooked penalties led to several
incidents late in the third and in overtime. As the period progressed,
the Flames were obviously running out of gas as they played most of the
period in the defensive zone repetitively iceing the puck everytime they
gained possession. At 15:03 of the third UIC called a time out which was
really needed. They took advantage of the rest and 53 seconds later, tied
the game on a goal by Kevin O'Keefe. The third period ended that way.

Finally in overtime the drought would not continue as Jason Botterill
tried to deliver a 2-handed baseball slash to Clay Awe. He raised his arm
to defend himself and deflected the blow with his hand reinjuring his
finger that was broken during the Providence game New Year's weekend. He
was taken off the ice to the lockeroom. Graff tried to ignore this
incident but the lineman trailing the play called it. Even the Michigan
fans I was sitting with thought it should have been a major penalty, but
Graff called it 2 minutes. UIC pressed hard during the power play but
could only muster 1 shot on goal while absorbing several dirty hits
including a blatant crosscheck by Marty Turco after the whistle. UIC
finally did put the puck in the net at 3:23 of over time on a goal by Rob
Mottau, his second of the game and his 8th of the year. Immediately after
the goal both benches cleared and led to a brawl for several minutes. This
was caused by both the earlier slash and by Rob Mottau being sticked just
prior to the goal.

Well, it is a nice facility at Seven Bridges, but it will be good to
return home to the Pavilion next weekend. The ice out at Seven Bridges,
however, is terrible. It was so soft that it was chewed up within 3 or 4
minutes of play. The ice on several instances affected play as players
had a hard time retaining their footing on full acceleration.

Flame notes:

Mark Zdan's scoring streak ended tonight at 6 points in 4 games and points
in 7 of 8 games.

Next weekend, the UIC Flames welcome the Lakers of Lake Superior State
University. While the Wolverines take on BG and MSU.
