I understand the concerns cited here.  I don't believe that students
should transfer merely to play hockey, that the Matignon situation was a
nightmare.  There are requirements, I believe, however, requiring
students to be progressing toward a degree which should obviate some of
the concern cited at the college level.  At least without researching the
question it seems
like mid semester transfers might (would?) have a problem meeting the
requirement of making this progress.  The issue of transfer credits comes
up as well.
 
My point, which is an uncomfortable one for those of us who follow
college athletics as fans, is that the players produce a great deal of
revenue for schools and I don't believe the monetary value of the
scholarship comes close to what that value is worth, at least for the
better players.  This is more debateable in hockey, but self evident for
football and basketball.
 
This is my concern about the one year rule.  It serves as kind of an
indentured servitude.  Perhaps there are other ways to ensure that
students are students first.
