It nearly happened in 1971, when Minnesota went 11-16-2 during the regular
season, but got  hot during the WCHA playoffs and won two games, earning a
trip to the NCAA's. The Gophers won their semifinal game against Harvard,
but lost the championship game to BU. Had they won, they would have been
NCAA champions with a 15-16-2 record.
