Some notes from this morning's Lansing State Journal:

1. Ron Mason needs 5 more wins to become the winningest coach in college hockey
in North America. He would pass Clare Drake, who coached off-and-on
at the University of Alberta for 28 seasons and compiled a record of
        697-296-28. Mason's record after 28 seasons is 693-302-49. Scary
thought: Ron Mason is only 54 years old.

2. With the call-up of Brian McReynolds from Pheonix of the IHL to the Los
Angeles Kings, there are now 17 ex-Spartans in the NHL, more than
        any other school.

3. When Ferris St. comes to Munn Arena on Friday, it will be the final appear-
ance for E. Lansing native Doug Smith, who most recently scored 4 goals
in FSU's 6-1 win over OSU. Considering the nightmares that Ferris has
given MSU the past few years, it seems Doug enjoys his trips home.

P. S. Hats off to Kentucky basketball coach Rick Pitino. After discovering
that three of his players were involved in a free-throw swapping scheme
in their recent victory over Vanderbilt, he suspended all three for
tonight's game against Tennessee. "This type of behavior cannot be
tolerated from a Kentucky basketball player. It's important that all
the kids that look up to Kentucky players as role models understand that they made a mistake." The three players: Travis Ford, Jared Prickett,

and Gimel Martinez. Would that more caoches in other sports acted this
        way.
