In article <[log in to unmask]>, Martin D. Hill <[log in to unmask]> writes:
To all you Hartford Whalers fans out there:
Jeff Jackson has accepted a position as an assistant coach of the Hartford
Whalers. You folks around Connecticut have probably heard about this. You
should be happy.
Jackson leaves behind his position as head coach of Lake Superior State
University. In just three years he has been able to complete his resume.
His first year he led the Lakers to a CCHA regular season and playoff title.

He followed that up with a second CCHA playoff title and an NCAA championship.
This year he led LSSU to its third consecutive CCHAplayoff title and its second
consecutive appearance in the NCAA title game; losing to Maine. Overall, he
has compiled a remarkable 98-22-13 record.

Before becoming head coach, Jackson was an assistant at LSSU under Frank
Anzalone. During his tenure as an assistant, the Lakers were able to
capture their first ever NCAA championship (1988) and a CCHA regular season
title.

I was a student at Lake Superior State during Jackson's first year as head
coach. I got to meet him while working for the school paper. I have to
admit, I have never met a more class act than Jackson. He receives
tremendous respect from his players and from the city of Sault Ste. Marie.

I don't know how Whalers head coach Paul Holmgren plans to use Jackson.
Jackson's teams have been very defensive-minded (often allowing only 10-15
shots a game!) and very disciplined (this year's team was one of the least
penalized in the nation). If the Whalers need work on defense, they won't
find a better teacher than Jackson.

Our loss is your gain. I always thought Jackson would make a good NHL coach,
now we'll just have to see. As for us Laker fans, the search begins for a
replacement.
