Summary:

RPI blew out Union of the 2nd time this season, this time by an 8-3
score at Achilles Rink. The loss puts Union deeper into last place in
the league, while RPI moves into 2nd place past Yale.

RPI came right out with 2 quick goals on Union goalie Mike Gallant. And
when Gallant gives up a few early goals, it usually means a long night
for Union. Union pulled to within 1 with a goal from Ryan Alaspa, which
brought the oranges out of the crowd into the RPI end of the ice. I'd
say it took only about 5 minutes to clean up the ice, but it killed any
momentum the Dutchmen might have had. It took only 9 seconds for the
Engineers to get that goal back, as Craig Hamelin scored for the second
time in the period.

Union came back to bring it to 3-2 on a Chris Sears 5-on-3 power play
goal. The Dutchmen stayed within one until midway though the second,
but that's when it all fell apart. RPI scored 4 times in about 6 1/2
minutes. 2 of those goals were with Union's Reid Simonton in the box,
where he spent about half of the game. RPI's 6th goal knocked Gallant
out in favor of Luigi Villa. It didn't help. On their first shot on
Villa, RPI scored again to take a 7-2 lead. A brawl (a big one by
college hockey standards) broke out at the end of the 2nd period. I
don't know how it started, but I know it involved Chris Hancock and
Wayne Clarke. Each player received a spearing penalty plus a game
misconduct.

Union did score early in the 3rd, but again that goal was quickly
followed by another RPI goal. After that, Luigi Villa was able to keep
RPI off the board even though he faced 21 shots during the period.

After the 2 games between these teams this year (9-3 and 8-3 wins by
RPI), it's obvious who is the better team. Union just couldn't keep up
with the Engineers. The only two real blowouts of the year have been to
RPI. Even so, this is already a great rivalry. It's going to be a lot
of fun when these teams are more evenly matched. I'd guess about 500 RPI
fans made the short trip, and I'm sure lots of others couldn't get
tickets. It was a huge improvement over last season when it seemed that
over half of the crowd was for RPI.

Union is now 2-11 in the ECAC, 2-14 overall, while RPI is 8-3-1 in the
league, 11-5-4 overall. Union will host Brown this Friday night at
Achilles Rink.
