HUSKIES HOST ECAC POWER ST. LAWRENCE FRIDAY-SATURDAY
        Saints Making First-Ever Appearance In Houghton

This Week: The Michigan Tech men's ice hockey team will open the NCAA
portion of its 2001-02 schedule this weekend with a home series
against Eastern College Athletic Conference power St. Lawrence.
Opening faceoff both Friday (Oct. 12) and Saturday (Oct. 13) is set
for 7:05 p.m. (EDT) at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena (4,200) on the
MTU campus.

The Records: Michigan Tech is officially 0-0-0 heading into play this
weekend, although the Huskies did defeat the U.S. National Select
Under 18 Team by an 11-0 count last Thursday (Oct. 4) in Houghton.
St. Lawrence will be playing its first games of the season.

Coach Mike Sertich: Mike Sertich embarks on his first full season
behind the Michigan Tech bench and 20th season overall as a
collegiate hockey coach in 2001-02. One of the nation's most
respected tacticians, Sertich owns a 357-345-47 career record and a
7-17-3 mark at Michigan Tech. Prior to arriving at Michigan Tech on
Nov. 9, 2000, Sertich had spent 18 seasons as the head coach at
Minnesota-Duluth. He is a four-time WCHA Coach of the Year and has
also been named the American Hockey Coaches Association Coach of the
Year.

Coach Mike Sertich On This Week: "We're really looking forward to
having St. Lawrence here. They're an awfully good team. I've know
their coach, Joe Marsh, for a long time and the people of the area
are really in for a treat. He's a tremendous coach and I'd encourage
everyone to come out to the Blueline Luncheon on Friday because he's
also a very funny guy."

The Series: Michigan Tech and St. Lawrence will meet for just the
fifth and sixth times ever this week. In an all-time series that
began on March 17, 1960, MTU owns a 3-1-0 advantage.

Huskies Hints: Michigan Tech will host St. Lawrence for the first
time ever this weekend in Houghton, Mich. The two teams have met four
previous times, with two of those meetings coming  in the NCAA
semifinals. Tech won both NCAA meetings, including a 13-3 victory on
March 17, 1960, in Boston, Mass., and a 6-1 triumph on March 16,
1962, in Hamilton, N.Y. . . . Senior Jaron Doetzel (Red Deer, Alta.)
is currently serving as the Huskies' captain. Michigan Tech head
coach Mike Sertich intends to rotate captains on a monthly basis
throughout the season . . . Junior goaltender Brian Rogers (Flint,
Mich.) has 85 minutes of shutout hockey to start the 2001-02
campaign. Rogers stopped all 15 shots in 60 minutes of action vs. the
USA National Under 18 Team last Thursday (Oct. 5) and then had 17
saves in 25 minutes of play Friday (Oct. 6) in the team's annual
Silver/Gold Intrasquad game . . . Senior forward Paul Cabana
(Calgary, Alta.) has led or tied for the team lead in goals in each
of his first three campaigns. Cabana had two goals vs. the USA
National Under 18 Team and scored the first goal of Friday's (Oct. 5)
Silver/Gold Intrasquad Game . . . The 11 goals scored by the Huskies
vs. the USA National Under 18 Team were the most by a Michigan Tech
team since an 11-3 victory at Minnesota on Dec. 19, 1987 (537 games
ago) . . . Sophomore forward Jon Pittis (Calgary, Alta.) led all
point getters in the Silver/Gold Intrasquad game last Friday (Oct. 5)
with three goals and two assists . . . Senior forward Jaron Doetzel
(Red Deer, Alta.) had four assists last Thursday (Oct. 4) in Tech's
11-0 win over the USA National Under 18 team . . . The first 2,000
fans attending Friday's home game vs. St. Lawrence will receive a
free foam Spirit Stik, compliments of the Huskies, Daily Mining
Gazette, Vollwerth, and Pepsi-Cola . . . A Pep Rally exclusively for
the Junkyard Dogs, Blueline Club, and MTU Pep Band will take place
prior to Friday's (Oct. 12) MTU-St. Lawrence matchup in the SDC Gym.
The Pep Rally, sponsored by the Memorial Union and Blueline Club,
will begin at 5:30 p.m. . . . Mix 93, the official radio home of the
Huskies, will be broadcasting live outside the MacInnes Student Ice
Arena from 2 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 12). Mix 93 will be
giving away tickets throughout the week to its Mix 93 Sports Jam
party in the Begg Conference Room of the Hockey Educational Center
that will take place prior to Friday's game.

About St. Lawrence: Joe Marsh (New Hampshire, 1977) is in his 17th
season as head coach at St. Lawrence. He owns a career record of
305-216-32. The top Saints' returnee offensively is senior
wing/center Russ Bartlett. He had 43 points a year ago, his first
season on the St. Lawrence roster after transferring from Boston
University. Senior captain Robin Carruthers (6-12--18) and junior
center Blair Clarance (11-9--20) are other top offensive threats for
SLU. Defensively, assistant captain Ray DiLauro (3-11--14) and
sophomore Ryan Glenn (3-1--4) are the Saint leaders, while in goal,
junior Tim Hall will battle redshirt freshman Sean Knaub and freshmen
Kevin Ackley and Mike McKenna for playing time.

Huskies Drive Time: Huskies Drive Time, a 30-minute show featuring
the ins and outs of Michigan Tech athletics, airs each Wednesday at
7:30 a.m. on Mix 93 (93.5 FM). Huskies hockey coach Mike Sertich will
can be heard weekly on Huskies Drive Time during the hockey season.

Coaches Corner/Blueline Luncheon: The next Coaches Corner/Blueline
Club Luncheon of the season is set for Friday (Oct. 12) at 12 noon in
the Lake Superior Room of the Northern Lights Restaurant. MTU hockey
coach Mike Sertich, St. Lawrence hockey coach Joe Marsh, and Huskies
football coach Bernie Anderson are the featured speakers. Cost for
the buffet luncheon is $6.75 per person, which includes tax and tip.
Blueline Club members receive a 50-cent discount.

Huskies On Teamline: All Michigan Tech games can be heard live by
those outside the WKMJ-FM listening area on Teamline.  Fans wishing
to hear a game should dial 1-800-846-4700 and then enter MTU's Team
Code of 1149. The cost to hear a game is billed either to your Visa
or Mastercard.  A portion of the proceeds goes to MTU athletics.

Up Next: After hosting St. Lawrence this weekend, the Huskies will
hit the road for their first WCHA series of the season -- at St.
Cloud State -- Oct. 19-20.
