ORONO, MAINE. --  Martin Kariya tallied two goals and two assists as the
eighth-ranked Providence College Friars were defeated by the 14th-ranked
University of Maine Black Bears 4-2, in HOCKEY EAST action on Saturday,
March 3 at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine.  The Black Bears tallied three
third period goals in the victory and limited the Friars' offense to just
nine shots on goal.
          The Friars tallied the game's first goal at the 9:55 mark of the first
period.  Devin Rask received a pass from Peter Fregoe inside the left
face-off circle, he then turned and fired a low wrist shot under the pads of
Maine goaltender Matt Yeats.  Rask's power-play tally was his team-leading
19th goal of the season.
        At the 2:23 mark of the second period, Maine's Martin Kariya tied the game
1-1.  Kariya controlled a rebound near the left face-off circle, carried the
puck through the slot and backhanded it past PC's Nolan Schaefer.  Schaefer
kept the Friars in the game on numerous occasions, as he stopped 21 shots in
the opening 40 minutes of play.  The Friars were unable to muster any
offense, recording only three shots on goal in the second period.
        The Friars took advantage of a Maine turnover at the blue line as Rask
tallied his second goal of the night at the 6:04 mark of the third.  Rask
broke in one-on-one with Yeats and snapped a low wrist shot past the Black
Bear's netminder.
                The Black Bears fought back and tied the game 2-2 at the 12:35 mark of the
third period.  Michael Schutte beat Schaefer with a wrap-around goal, his
11th of the season.  Maine struck again at the 18:54 mark of the third
period.    Peter Metcalf fired a shot from the point, off the face off,
that beat Schaefer for the game-winner.  Kariya added a empty net goal for
the Black Bears.
         Schaefer stopped 30 shots in the loss, while Yeats recorded 9 saves in the
win for the Black Bears.
        With the loss,  Providence's record stands at 19-9-5 overall, 13-7-3 in
league play, while Maine's record improves to 16-10-7 overall and 11-7-5 in
HOCKEY EAST action.
        The Friars will return to action against Maine on Saturday, March 3 at
Alfond Arena at 7:00 p.m.
