I don't know if this is THE rule that was broken, but it seems to fit the bill:
 
14.1 GENERAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
 
14.1.6 Full-time Enrollment
 
14.1.6.1 Requirement for Practice. To be eligible to participate in organized
practice sessions, a student-athlete shall be enrolled in a minimum full-time
program of studies leading to a baccalaureate or equivalent degree as defined
by the regulations of the certifying intitution. (Rev. 1/10/92)
 
Which says, fairly clearly, that you must at least go TO THAT SCHOOL to
practice with the team. I would guess the rule was devised to keep large
football programs from using JuCos as farm or scout teams.
 
and I'll reiterate...I think if Buetow was still around, CC would be banned from
postseason comp. at least for this season.
