This appointment was made following a national search that began in January.

Marcela has been working at LPL since June of 2012 when she began working in our Adult & Teen Services Department. In January of 2014 she was promoted to head of that Department.

Her education includes a Bachelor of Arts from Cornell University and an MLIS from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She also holds certificates from the Androscoggin Leadership Development Institute, the New England Library Leadership Symposium, and the Maine Library Leadership Institute.

Marcela is active professionally and with the greater-Lewiston community. Volunteer commitments include serving as Board Vice-Chair with Literacy Volunteers of Androscoggin County and membership on both the Program Committee of Tree Street Youth and on the Maine State Workforce Women's Employment Issues Committee. She serves on the Board of the Maine Library Association where she is the Communications Committee Chair. In addition she is active in ALA, serving on the Graphic Novel Member Interest Group and in YALSA as a member of the MAE Award Jury. Her professional memberships also include PLA, LLAMA, & NELA.

According to City Manager, Ed Barrett, "Marcela rose to the top of the field on the basis of her knowledge of our library and our community, her vision for the library's future, the work she has done to prepare herself for this position, and her enthusiasm.  As the hiring process moved forward, the members of the search committee became more and more convinced that she was the right candidate for the job."  Darby Ray, Chair of the Library Board and a member of the search committee, added: "The combination of Marcela's educational background, relevant experience, collaborative instincts, forward-looking vision for the library, and deep commitment to this community set her apart from other applicants. She is superbly qualified to lead the library into the future."
