In what was an eagerly-awaited matchup of the current 2nd and 3rd
place teams in HE, host BU rolled over Mass Lowell, 9-1. Elsewhere,
BC led Yale in the third at the Whale, 7-4, but I didn't hear a final.

This was the worst beating BU has ever given Lowell. It breaks the
record for most goals BU has ever scored against Lowell, and the
eight-goal margin of victory equals an 8-0 win BU had in 1983 when
Lowell was a DivI Independent. Lowell has now surrendered 20 goals in
two straight games, having lost 11-3 to RPI last week, and that is the
most goals Lowell has allowed in two straight since the 1989-90 HE
quarterfinals when the Chiefs were swept by Maine, 7-3 and 16-0.

BU scored 3 times in each period and led 6-0 after the second. At
that point, Dwayne Roloson was pulled (having allowed 13 goals in four
periods over his last two games). In Roloson's defense, WLLH
play-by-play man Bob Ellis said that he was often the victim of 2x1s,
as the Lowell defense seems to have collapsed for some unknown reason.

BU takes over sole possession of second in HE. G Derek Herlofsky
returned to the net for the first time in a month and stopped 27 of 28
shots. Mike Pomichter was #1 star with 2-2--4, and Jacques Joubert
was #2 star with 1-2--3. With the loss of Pandolfo to the US junior
team, Mike Grier has apparently been moved to the top line and it
sounds like he's played well there. The BU scoring seemed pretty
well-balanced.

There was a scuffle at the end of the game and one player from each
side was handed a major for fighting and a DQ. BU's Wright (who
played his first game and scored) and Lowell's Mayes will each sit out
their team's next game.

BU is now within striking distance of first-place Maine with 12 points
(6-2-0) to Maine's 14 (7-3-0), but BU has 2 games in hand. BU is
12-4-0 overall, Lowell 9-5-2. BU takes on Providence in a
home-and-home this weekend while both Maine and Lowell are off in HE
play; Lowell will host Army Sunday afternoon.

Updated HE standings will be sent out tomorrow once I hear the BC-Yale
final.
