THE GAME
This was definitely a better game to watch than the previous night. The Tigers
came out to play and almost pulled off a win, which would've been their first
since the win over Northern Michigan three weeks earlier. The game was much
faster paced and there were several excellent scoring opportunities for both
teams, and a lot of credit goes to both goaltenders for making some spectacular
saves. CC struck first on a power play goal by Remackel in the second half of
the first period. No more scoring for that period, but one hell of a brawl
erupted 30 seconds later. Badger Jason Zent and Tiger Jay McNeill, the initial
instigators of this behind the Wisconsin goal, each got a 10 minute misconduct
plus Zent got a double minor roughing and McNeill got a minor roughing. After
they started, Badger Mark Strobel and Tiger David Paxton, as well as Badger
Blaine Moore and Tiger Marcus Taeck went at it as well. These last four all
received game DQs for fighting. The second period started off with a bang as
Jim Paradise increased CC's lead to 2 only 49 seconds into it. Wisconsin got
on the board a few minutes later with a goal from Shier to make it 2-1. A
minute and a half later CC would regain its 2 goal lead with a goal from
Peter Geronazzo. Then Wisconsin exploded as they scored 3 goals within 3 and
a half minutes to take the lead at 4-3. CC tied it up fairly early in the
third period on a power play goal by Jody Jaraczewski, and held the score there
for about 10 minutes before Wisconsin struck again to regain the lead at 5-4.
With 1:15 left in the game, Buetow called time out and pulled Badalich. My
first thought was "Oh no, doesn't he ever learn?
", but luckily this time we were able to pull off the 6 on 5 and score 8
seconds later to tie it at 5-5. The Tigers held out the last 1:07 to force
the game into overtime. Both teams had some good opportunities in overtime,
but nothing went in until there was 22 seconds remaining and Wisconsin's Shier
put one past Badalich. Just before the score, though, Dan Plante apparently
hooked Tiger Kent Fearns as he was skating out of the zone to grab the puck
and put it back into the zone. The refs called nothing on it, and Fearns, very
angry over the non-call, shoved and yelled at the refs, earning himself a
misconduct and game DQ. Buetow was also quite upset at the lack of a call and
also earned himself a misconduct penalty. In today's Gazette-Telegraph, Buetow
had this to say about referees Buzz Christensen and Don Adam :"The refs gave it
to them! Two blatant non-calls in the last two minutes! They didn't want to
call it against a contending team! They gave it to them! Just gave it to
them!" It's really too bad the way this game had to end, but at least I
finally got to see the Tigers with some life in them again.
The next game for the Tigers is Tuesday night in a non-league game
with Air Force at the Academy. Hopefully they'll be able to pull off a win
in this game, recalling this fall's 12-3 blowout of the Academy on Nov. 11,
to boost their spirits in preparation for the home and home series with DU
March 5 and 6.
