With the conference post-season tournaments over and the NCAA tournament
almost upon us, it's time to announce the winners of the Pick the
Post-Season Tournament contests. For Contest #1, in which the later rounds
were weighted more than the earlier ones, the overall winner, for the
second year in a row, is...
Nick Markham
whose total of 200 beat runner-up Wayne Smith by five points.
Congratulations again, Nick, on your extremely refined prognosticating
skills and -- aah, you lucky son-OF-A -- oops, excuse me. Anyway, well done.
As for the individual conference winners...
The ECACH title went to the only person with the nerve to pick Princeton to
win it all: yours truly, with 39 points. And if that doesn't convince you
of the role that blind luck plays in this contest, well, I don't know what
will :-)
Mike Larson finished atop the Hockey East standings with 44 points.
The CCHA saw a tie for the top spot between Nick Markham and Wayne Smith,
with 58 points each. The first tiebreaker, championship game score,
resolved nothing, but Nick took the title with the second tiebreaker, as
his predicted total number of goals in the tournament was 13 points closer
to the real total.
Tony Buffa won the WCHA race with 47 points, on the strength of being the
only person to pick Denver to win it all.
From last week's update, Nick Markham's 42 points were good enough to win
the Atlantic Hockey race, while Robin Lock took the CHA in a tiebreaker
with 36 points.
Complete scoring results are below. Congratulations to all the winners,
and thanks again to all those who participated.
Tiebreaker notes: The first tiebreaker was the difference between your
predicted championship-game score and the actual score. Thus, if you
picked the score of the ECAC championship game (actually 4-1) to be 3-2,
you would get two points; if you picked 1-0, you would get four points; and
if you picked 6-4, you would get five points. Obviously, the lower the
point score the better.
The second tiebreaker was the difference between your predicted total of
goals scored in the entire tournament and the actual number. Again, the
lower the point total the better.
As far as tiebreakers that were actually needed:
For the CCHA, the championship game score was 2-1 and the total goals
scored in the tournament was 148.
For the CHA (from last week), the championship game score was 3-2 and the
total goals scored in the tournament was 23.
The USCHO prognosticators' numbers are included below, as are the "Higher
Seed" picks showing what would have happened if the higher seed for each
game had been picked to win.
