After I posted the Kennedy quote this morning, and was putting the article
on my wall, something struck me. Kennedy said that the committee's interests
were with the group selling the tickets, rather than the TV coverage. What I
get from that statement is that the NC$$'s first priority was the sale of ticke
ts,rather than the exposure college hockey would gain from being on TV. Should
n't the schools and "doing what's in the best interest" of college hockey be th
e NC$$ commitee's first priorities??? Could it really be that the NC$$ is ONLY
interested in $$$$ ?? This might not be the case. The $$$ raised by
selling the coverage rights to either a large network(NESN) or to small local
stations(The Maine Broadcasting System put in a bid to show the UMaine game)
could have been enough to ofset the loss the NC$$ would incur with the sluggish
ticket sales. However, the amount of the bids put in is known only to the NC$
$ and the respective stations. They may have been too low to cover the loss.
In any event, the NC$$ had the chance to give College Hockey good exposure,
and please a lot of fans by letting the games be shown live. They blew it.
Let's hope Kennedy is right, and this doesn't happen in Albany!
