Bob W., I think that is a big IF. And Eric, in running on a tournament, there are legal issues involved. I still believe this has mostly to do with the NCAA protecting themselves against lawsuits. This is still a live issue in the courts regarding trademarks that denigrate or defame. I did find a rather thorough history of the issues both at UND and the trademark issue in the courts. I included links below for anyone interested. Clearly, these are from only one source. One advantage of an open forum is that commentary and other sources can be offered to further our understanding.

In reading these sources, I see that there may well be a history at UND that makes this very sensitive there. I learned that Dartmouth was one of the first to change - from Indians to Big Green in 1969. The Governor of North Dakota is a 1979 Dartmouth alum which helps balance the political dynamics of the recent issue on the Dartmouth campus. Wonder if there will be protests at the upcoming Ledyard Bank tournament.

Basically, it seems to me that the results in the courts will likely drive the issue more than anything else. Whether it is the NCAA or the University, it seems that it is largely about the money. Seems, for example, that UND gave up the "Blackhawk logo" due to expecting to have to pay that Illinois NHL team for rights to use it. An announced altruistic purpose often serves to disguise greed. Remember, this is the season,,,,,,,
