UMASS DARTMOUTH DEFEATS BABSON AT BABSON INVITATIONAL, 7-2

BABSON PARK, MA– It took the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth hockey team less than five minutes to set the tone for their game against host Babson at the Babson Invitational Saturday.

The Corsairs scored three goals in the first 4:25 and went on to defeat the Beavers, 7-2, in the tournament’s second semi-final game at the Babson Skating Center.

Junior forward Jeff Grant (Burlington, MA/Austin Prep) won the opening face-off, and senior forward Kyle McCullough (Danvers, MA/Boston Junior Blackhawks) took a pass, broke in alone and scored against Babson starting goaltender Ryan Moses 10 seconds into the game. Senior forward Jim Foley (Brockton, MA/Catholic Memorial HS) also assisted. Sophomore forward Nick Paquin (Warwick, RI/Winchendon Academy) increased UMD’s lead by scoring a shorthanded goal at the 2:28 mark, slamming the rebound of a shot by sophomore forward Chris Shore (West Haven, CT/Winchendon Academy) past Moses, who was then lifted in favor of Skylar Nipps. Junior forward Paul Garabedian (Belmont, MA/Belmont HS) made it 3-0 at 4:25, while John Geverd scored on a rebound for Babson to make it 3-1 after the first period.

Garabedian assisted on a goal by freshman Pat Welch (Dorchester, MA/Pomfret School) at the 9:50 mark of the second period that gave UMass Dartmouth a 4-1 advantage. After Alex DiPetro scored a power play goal for the Beavers, senior defenseman Paul Carr (Springfield, MA/Cathedral HS) replied in kind for UMD, and Grant made it 6-2 with a goal at the 16:00 mark. Grant’s power play goal was the only goal of the third period.

“We got off to a quick start, it was 3-0 before things even got settled down,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “It took a while to get things settled, but I thought we played very well in the second period in extending our lead. We got two power play goals and a shorthanded goal, and (sophomore goaltender) Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) played very well. We skated with them, and we played a smart game.”

The Beavers out shot, UMass Dartmouth 34-21. Green made 32 saves, while Moses and Nipps combined to make 14.

UMD improved to 6-0-0 with the victory, while Babson fell to 0-3. The Corsairs will play Geneseo State for the tournament championship Sunday afternoon. The Ice Knights defeated Southern Maine in the other semi-final, 6-3. USM and Babson will play for third place prior to the championship game.
