To all concerned:
Mike McNamara, a sophomore winger for Elmira, collided with Steve Ashe,
a senior defenseman for Plattsburgh State, during second period play in Satur-
day's second quarterfinal game in Plattsburgh. It was a clean check, a heavy
one, and McNamara was caught by surprise. It was also clear that he did not
hit his head on the ice. He went into convulsions immediately to the horror of
the over 3500 fans. Medical personnel were on him immediately, and may have
saved his life during the ensuing five minutes on the ice. He was taken off
unconscious, and today his condition was upgraded from critical to serious. He
may have been airlifted today to Boston or another larger medical facility, I'm
not sure. He is definitely not out of the woods. The rest of the game was
clearly not played with any enthusiasm, and Plattsburgh State players attended
a prayer service Sunday together to offer their hopes and thoughts. They also
gathered at the arena after McNamara was taken off for a prayer. We are all
shaken here in Plattsburgh, and hope and pray for the best for Mike and his
loved ones. Just an awful, awful set of circumstances.
Tim
