Seawolves Take First Game in Governor’s Cup

ANCHORAGE, AK–The University of Alaska Anchorage’s hockey team scored twice within a span of two minutes and 39 seconds late in the second period and held on for a 5-2 victory over the University of Alaska Fairbanks in the first game of the Alaska Airlines Governor’s Cup at Sullivan Arena.

Brent McMann and Chris Tarkir scored late in the second period to break a 1-all tie and give the Seawolves a lead that they would not relinquish.

McMann’s wrist shot sailed past several players and a screened Nanook senior goaltender Keith Bartusch (Graham, WA/Fairbanks-NPJHL) at 16:42 of the second period. Chris Tarkir scored to give UAA a 3-1 lead after a failed UAF clearing attempt 39 seconds before the second period ended.

Freshman defenseman T.J. Campbell (Fort MacMurray, AB/Fort MacMurray-AJHL)’s late third period goal for the Nanooks was sandwiched by a pair of empty net goals by the Seawolves. After Justin Bourne scored into an empty net for UAA, Campbell’s long shot evaded Seawolf goaltender Nathan Lawson at 18:53 before another empty net goal with 24 seconds remaining accounted for the final score. Lawson stopped 36 shots to record his second victory in as many starts.

Sophomore center Curtis Fraser (Surrey, BC/Vernon-BCJHL) converted a pass from freshman left wing Kyle Greentree (Victoria, BC/Victoria-BCHL) at 9:30 of the second period for the Nanooks to tie the game at 1-1. Shea Hamilton’s tucked a rebound past Bartusch to give UAA a 1-0 lead after the first period.

“We made some mental mistakes, and it’s awful hard to win hockey games when you take a lot of penalties,” said UAF Head Coach Tavis MacMillan. “We’ll have to be better tomorrow night than we were tonight.”

UAF fell to 1-2 with the defeat, while UAA improved to 2-0-1 with the victory. The Nanooks and Seawolves will play the second game of the four-game Alaska Airlines Governor’s Cup series when they meet Saturday evening at Sullivan Arena in Anchorage.
