Results from the 2004 Boston College Pike's Peak Club hockey banquet:

Academic Awards - senior with highest GPA, Ben Eaves; advisor's award
for achievement, Brett Peterson.

Outstanding Freshman - Joe Rooney

"Snooks" Kelley Award (player best typifying BC hockey) - Ryan Shannon
and Ben Eaves

Flynn Award (coaches award) - Justin Dziama

Tiernan Award (most improved player) - Stephen Gionta

Dailey Award (most valuable player) - Tony Voce

2004-05 Captain - Ryan Shannon
Assistant Captains - Ryan Murphy, Andrew Alberts, Pat Eaves

It was a pretty good turnout for the dinner, and followed the typical
banquet protocol. As is usual, they featured a few players from the
50th and 25th anniversary teams (1954 and 1979.) Joe Mullen was there
from the 1979 team, a pretty good player in his day (2 team MVP awards)
and probably the best American-born player in the NHL so far. Former
Tiernan Award winner Chris Masters (1999) was there to present that
award. Former coach Len Ceglarski, former player and Red Sox coach Joe
Morgan, and Wisconsin coach Mike Eaves were all there. Most of the
speakers had high praise to lavish on Ben Eaves (and Tony Voce noted that
his 2 team MVP awards both came in years that Ben was injured for a
good part of the year.) Coach York was effusive in his praise for Ben,
above and beyond his normal praise for the team's best player overall. It
is obvious that he really enjoyed coaching Ben, and Ben made a vague
reference to being around the program for some time to come, so I don't
know what that implies. Steve Gionta noted that some of his teammates
pointed out that receiving the Most Improved Player award means that "you
weren't very good last year". :-))

These events are always enjoyable, giving everyone a last chance to
visit with friends and provide closure to the season. Things were mostly
upbeat overall despite the loss in the Frozen Four, as folks have learned
how much of an accomplishment it is to get there (and the memory of the
less successful years of the mid-90s isn't that far behind us.) Since
1998 the program has been in the NCAA tourney 6 of 7 years, in the Frozen
Four 5 of 7 years, and played for 3 national titles, winning one. That's
a pretty impressive stretch, and the challenge is on next year's team to
maintain that record of achievement.
