Living now in Maryland I feel obliged to chime in .... The original words
for "Maryland, My Maryland" - now the Maryland state anthem - were quite
inflammatory when first penned during the height of the Civil War, when
sympathizers for both sides (Maryland was a border state, of course) were
quite numerous/vocal. A movement is now afoot to designate another, less
offensive tune as the official State Anthem, much as folks in neighboring
Virginia periodically lobby to deep six the racist lyrics to "Carry Me
Back to Old Virginny" .... But I digress .... :-)

The pertinent college hockey relevance concerns the hoped for match-up
one day between Clarkson (DivI ECAC) and Holy Cross (DivI MAAC). Since
both schools set their alma maters to this tune, it would certainly make
for some lively banter in the stands, especially if they met in a *Christ-
mas* Tournament, since all the non-aligned fans wouldn't know the words to
EITHER alma mater, and would simply start belting out "Oh Christmas Tree"
instead .... :-) Brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it <grin>

Cheers from the Chesapeake - Jim
