TEXT/PLAIN (75 lines)
(08Nov98) Sunday afternoon at Matthews Arena the Northeastern Huskies bombed
the Patriots of Saint-Laurent 9-1. Les Patriotes were in over their heads.
The Huskies used crisp passing and some good speed to overpower the visitors
from Quebec.

As the match began, Northeastern was showing some clever movement. The result
was an early power play goal from Hilary Witt (Erine Metcalf, Brooke Whitney).
Metcalf took the shot/pass from the point and Witt captured and drilled her
chance from the slot. First-year Nancy Collins (Erica Archambeau, Jaime
Totten) made it 2-0 NU when she deflected another shot/pass from the point
high into the netting. St Laurent was being overrun. Witt (Archambeau,
Whitney) continued the bombardment after the line of Nicole Lewis, Collins and
Betsy Dyke had turned up the volume on the Patriotes. As Northeastern changed
lines, the pressure only increased until Witt put home a rebound. Jennifer
Santerre (Lisa Giovanelli, Kathryn Waldo) made it 4-0 with another power play
goal. The Husky pressure was relentless and St Laurent has having a lot of
trouble clearing the puck.

During the middle frame, Santerre notched a second marker when she was given
credit for an own-goal while NU was playing shorthanded. Santerre had broken
up a St Laurent power play rush at center ice and taken the puck down the
right wing before releasing her shot. Kathleen Savino, a sophomore transfer
from Boston College, (Archambeau) made it 6-0 Huskies when she received a long
feed, took the puck to the net on a wide-angle play and beat the goaltender
cleanly. The Patriots pulled one back when Caroline Girard (Marilyn Boucher,
Marie-Helene Dubois) scored on a power play after some nice puck movement. NU
was guilty of standing around. Witt (Totten, Whitney) completed her hat trick
with an elegant power play goal. Totten provided the perfect set to Witt in
the slot and the speedy forward finished it with a flourish.

The final period featured more domination by NU. Giovanelli (Colleen Coen)
made it 8-1 when she collected a rebound right in front of goal and buried her
try. Junior defender Jennie Setaro (Totten, Brooke White) completed the
scoring with a power play blast from the point that rocketed into the top
corner of the goal. The play surrounding that goal was typical of the
afternoon. St Laurent had produced a good breaking play. Blue liners Totten
and Archambeau had dug back and broken it up. As the Huskies broke up ice,
Setaro rotated on for her shift, and the players never skipped a beat as the
setup just flowed to create another lovely goal.

Saint-Laurent has a small squad and they looked fatigued. Perhaps if they
spent more time on skating and less on pushing and grabbing they would look
better. Dubois looked very tough on the blue line. She is a strong presence
on the ice for the Patriots. Marie-Josee Cote was a true power forward. Her
strength and speed gave the Northeastern defense some trying moments. Girard
had some really nice moves. She helped her team attack. Overall, St Laurent
had a tough time.

Northeastern's scoring touch appeared today. The passing and shooting was
much improved. The movement off the puck was so-so. I think that is the
reason the Husky attacking shape has yet to look sharp. Captain Totten was
the on-ice leader that made some great breakup plays. She also was a major
force on the attack with her intelligent raids and touch passing. Senior
Metcalf has improved her skating and is roaming around more effectively on the
blue line. Fresher Archambeau had another ingenious outing on defense. Her
reads are excellent and her movement is marvelous. The best unit up front was
the line of Giovanelli, Santerre and Waldo. Giovanelli and Waldo pulled off
some intriguing 1-2's. Coen and Savino were also coming up with some engaging
plays and gunning their chances. First-years Lewis and Collins were flying.
Lewis ignited several scoring chances with her brilliant passes. She is a
heads-up player that can change the point of attack in a flash. Lewis is a
cultivated router who might make some of the higher lines move better. The
woman of the match was power forward Witt. She is producing a lot of speed
and took her three goals with style. Overall, a good performance as the
Huskies prepare for league openers in Providence next weekend.
