The two sport rule wasn't always in place for schools like Clarkson. I
remember watching a Clarkson vs. Syracuse lacrosse game one spring. Many of
Clarkson's big hockey defensemen also were very good at lacrosse and also
played defense in lacrosse.

Well, Syracuse had a midfielder named John Mackey, who many of you might
recognize as having played tight end for many years after Syracuse for the
Colts. The first of the really big NFL tight ends. Unbelievable athlete.
Unstoppable in lacrosse. I thought our guys on defense (the hockey players)
were big and tough, but Mackey ran right through them and scored eight goals
or so in the first half. On the way into Clarkson's Alumni Gym for
half-time, Mackey was heard to say to the coach, "Coach, I think that'll be
all for me today." Reply, "That's fine, John. Thanks a lot. I really
appreciate it."
