wouldn't nmu's taking uic's place in the ccha for the
96-97 season leave the same hole in the wcha schedule
that uic's departure left in the ccha? and would nmu
face the same penalties that uic faced for such a
     sudden exit?

would there be any chance of the ccha and wcha working
together to make the nmu-uaf switch run smoothly for
     both leagues?

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner's staff writer Susan Adeletti reported on
Saturday, 4/13, that Northern Michigan officially applied for CCHA
membership on Thursday, 4/11. Northern Michigan's athletic director and
head coach will meet with the CCHA executive council on Tuesday to discuss
possible admission to the league. A decision will probably be made at next
week's CCHA league meeting. If Northern Michigan is accepted, they would
like to replace Illinois-Chicago in the 1996-1997 schedule.

Northern Michigan's admission to the CCHA may open an opportunity for
Alaska-Fairbanks to join Anchorage in the WCHA. UAF Athletic Director
Kelly Higgins has approached both leagues in the past about both teams
playing in the same conference and said that a move would make sense from a
scheduling and financial perspective as well as renewing the in-state
rivalry. WCHA commissioner Bruce McLeod stated that the possiblility of
adding UAF will be discussed along with applications for admission from
Mankato State and Nebraska-Omaha at the WCHA meeting later this month.
