I (wisely) passed up last night's Beanpot final, since I attended the semis
last Monday and didn't want to ask my sister-in-law to babysit again. The
ABSOLUTE HIGHLIGHT of the evening had to be the John Silber interview by
WABU's (and UNH grad) Alita Haytayan (sp?) between periods 1and 2. For those
of you who were unlucky enough to miss it, I'll give you the highlights.

Loosely quoted from my not-so-reliable memory:

AH: Well, what do you think of the game so far?

(BU 5 NU 3 in one of the most bizarre periods of hockey this writer has EVER
witnessed.)

JS: (Sternly) Well, I'm not too happy. It should be 5-0. This is not
acceptable.

AH: How would you like to see it?

JS: Oh, about 10-3.

(Strangely prophetic. The final was 11-4.)

Silber then launched into a mini-tirade aimed at Ms. Hatayan's wearing a
tuxedo (as did all the other WABU broadcasters, including in-studio analyst
Joe Bertagna. Aside to Joe B: Get a haircut!). Silber wanted to know WHY.
She explained that they were celebrating the first game in the FleetCenter,
to which he replied that the past Monday was the first game in the
Fleetcenter. She gamely countered that it was celebrating the first
CHAMPIONSHIP GAME in the Fleetcenter. She then said "Does this mean that I
can change into something else?" To which Dr. Silber replied: "It would be
an improvement."

WOW!! Better than the hockey!

Seriously, while I have been impressed all year with WABU's coverage, I have
felt strongly that Ms. Hatayan's sideline reports add little to the
broadcast. However, I will certainly give her credit for not losing her
composure during that interview.

PS: The UNH angle on this one is fascinating. In 1991, Silber's
gubernatorial campaign against William Weld imploded after an interview with
Channel 5's Natalie Jacobson (also a UNH grad) in which Silber went off the
deep end in response to a question asking him to reflect on his career and
identify anything that he would have done differently.

Maybe he just doesn't like UNH. <GRIN>
