Just been browsing this string on animals and objects being thrown
on the ice. A tradition at Cornell is to throw fish on the ice just
before Harvard/Cornell's annual match at Lynah Rink. (My knowledge of the
historical background to this is pretty lacking). No one has been hurt to
my knowledge. The annoying part is that the whole rink smells like fish
and if someone flinging a fish from one of the higher rows has a weak arm
ummm let's just say some people in the first few rows will smell even
worse.
Last year, during the annual Harvard/Cornell game, there were
several stoppages of play for people throwing objects DURING the game (the
fish throwing is usually limited to a period of a few minutes before the
game, during the pregame skate). The officials issued several warnings
saying that if any objects were thrown, a penalty would be called on Cornell.
When the players came out to start the 2nd period, objects were thrown.
The officials called a minor penalty on Cornell. With the ensuing PP,
Harvard scored. The final score that nite was Harvard 2 Cornell 1.
This year, during the Cornell/Harvard game, fish were thrown at
the start as usual. However, during the week preceding the game, local
papers/radio, university officials and other students warned ppl not to
throw fish when they were not supposed to. There were no incidents.
This just shows that at Cornell, the tradition of throwing fish is
something that has been continued without any noticable ill effects other
than everyone at the rink running home to take a shower afterwards.
