According to the Sports Illustrated Multimedia Almanac ... [assuming best
lecturing monotone] ... John W. Heisman coached Georgia Tech to the
national championship in 1917 and later served the Downtown Athletic Club
(the awarding body of the Heisman Trophy) as its Athletic Director.
 
(Why is it that all these years I've always thought the Heisman was in
memory of some young player who died tragically?)  Oh well.
