I never said universities exploited student-athletes. I simply said that
if a student-athlete is required to perform a task (e.g. play hockey)
in return for free tuition, room, and board, then that is a job, not
a grant. In a free-market system like ours wages are supposed to be
determined by market forces. Therefore, universities should be allowed
to pay as much for the services of a student-athlete as they would like
or are able to. Let's say that Lake Superior could only pay their hockey
players $10,000, but the University of Wisconsin could pay $20,000. Too
bad for Lake Superior, but Wisconsin should be able to offer $20,000.
I would like, once again, to reiterate that my preference is for a
system of need-based financial aid for all students, both athletes and
non-athletes.
