The BU Beanpot betweener game this year was against Lowell at Tully Forum
and it looked like a great chance for the River Hawks to beat BU. The
Terriers, playing in the game between the Beanpot first round and final,
against a team the have dominated and that was playing poorly, might be
looking past Lowell towards the Beanpot final versus BC. The River Hawks,
who had played poorly for the last three weeks, usually get up for every
game against BU, and would have liked nothing better than to end their skid
by ambushing the Terriers for a win.

THE FIRST PERIOD: Lowell come out flying at the start of the game, but it
cost them just 19 seconds into the period, as Brendan Concannon received a
penalty for hitting Tom Noble in a protected area as he charged up ice after
the opening face-off. The Terriers did not score on the ensuing powerplay
and Lowell took control of the game after returning to full strength. The
River Hawks applied pressure in the BU zone and it paid off with a goal at
3:17. Mike Nicholishen was high in the slot and shot the puck just inside
the left post, past a screened Noble. Less than two minutes later Lowell
increased the lead to 2-0, when playing 4-on-4 Rich Brennan lost the puck at
the BU blueline. David Dartsch pounced on the puck and with Bullock skated
in on Noble. Dartsch passed the puck forward to Bullock, who took a shot,
Noble made the save, but Bullock got the rebound and put it between Noble
and the near post.

A minute and ten seconds later BU scored on the powerplay, as Jon
Coleman blasted a shot from midpoint on the blueline. Fankhouser made the
save, but the rebound went to Jacques Joubert to the right of the slot, and
he put it into the net behind Fankhouser. The game was evenly played for
the next 5 plus minutes, with both teams having chances. Then, at 12:08
Lowell regained their 2 goal lead as Jon Mahoney was allowed to skate down
the slot uncovered. Jeff Daw passed the puck to him and he roofed it over
Noble's shoulder.

BU slowly took control of the game from that point and began applying
pressure in the River Hawk zone. The pressure resulted in the Terrier's
second goal a little over three minutes later, as Thornton attempted to
stuff the puck inside the left post on a wrap around. Instead the puck
squirted out into the slot where Chris O'Sullivan managed to knock it over
the Mike Grier, to the right of the net. As Fankhouser came across to cover
the net, Grier passed it back to Thornton, who was still at the left post
and alone, who shot it into the net. The Terriers continued to pressure
Lowell, but were unable to tie the score up before the period ended.

THE SECOND PERIOD: The second period started with a bench minor given to BU.
It was not announced why, but it was likely for BU not being ready to start
the period on time. The Terriers killed of the penalty and began to
pressure the Lowell net when some matching penalties resulted in 4-on-4 play
for 4 minutes with a 5 second break of 5-on-5. The referees, apparently not
wanting any 5-on-5 play, whistled Chris Libett seven seconds later for
slashing. The Terriers converted on the powerplay at 8:04, despite the
River Hawks going a decent job of killing the penalty. After clearing their
zone, the River Hawks got caught along the boards attempting to get the puck
from O'Sullivan, who passed it to Grier, and from Mike, who passed it to
Thornton at the Lowell blueline. Steve skated in alone and, from about five
feet out, lifted the puck over Fankhouser's shoulder on the glove side,
tying the game up 3-3.

Continuing with the idea that they did not want to see any 5-on-5 play, the
refs called Rich Brennan for interference 9 seconds later, giving Lowell a
powerplay. After killing the penalty, BU went back on the powerplay 29
seconds later, as Lowell was called for too many men on the ice. The
Terriers converted again, and took a 4-3 lead, when Rich Brennan blasted a
slapshot from midpoint on the blue line right through Fankhouser's legs. On
the ensuing center ice face-off Mike Sylvia won the draw back to Shane
Johnson on left defense. Shane made a nice cross ice pass to Matt Wright on
the right wing, who skated in and took a hard shot from the top of the
face-off circle to Fankhouser's left and put the puck into the far corner of
the net.

Coach Crowder had seen more than enough and he called time out to try and
regroup his team as he changed goalies, taking out Fankhouser and putting in
Lindsay. Less than a minute later Lindsay was facing the suddenly can't
miss Terrier powerplay, as Aaron Kriss was sent off for charging. Lindsay
fared no better than Fankhouser, as the Terriers scored their fourth
straight powerplay goal 44 second later. Kaj Linna passed the puck to an
open Mike Prendergast at the face-off dot in the left circle and Lindsay and
the Lowell defense turned to cover him he passed the puck to Jacques
Joubert, at his favorite spot just inside the right face-off circle, who put
it past Lindsay, who was unable to get in position to make a save. BU
struck again just 29 seconds later, this time 5-on-5 as Shawn bates stole
the puck from Ed Campbell in neutral ice on the left side and skated in with
Chris Drury trailing. Bates went across the top of the crease and Lindsay
made a great save, but the puck was left in the crease and Drury knocked it
into the net as Lindsay attempted to get his stick on it.

Late on a Lowell powerplay the game started to get rough and the referees
called two sets of matching and on set on misconducts. The players
temporarily settled down and BU scored their seventh consecutive goal at
17:44, as Steve Thornton scored his third goal of the game for a hat trick.
BU had pressure on in the Lowell zone and Grier passed the puck along the
boards back to O'Sullivan, to the right rear of the net. O'Sullivan passed
the puck out to Thornton who has at the top of the crease and he put it past
Lindsay on the stick side into the net. The game got rough again after the
goal, as first Bob Lachance went off for elbowing, then 39 seconds later
Paul Botto and went off for slashing and 33 seconds after that Neil Donovan
went off for tripping, with only 15 second left in the period.

Despite the Terriers getting 6 goals, including 3 powerplay goals, it was
not the best period of hockey I have seen this year. BU played well, took
advantage of their opportunities and killed off their penalties, but there
was not much flow to the period, as 19 penalties were called and the teams
skated 5-on-5 for only 5 minutes and 5 seconds, and only 56 seconds for the
first 12:09 of the period. All-in-all the Terriers played great, but it was
not great hockey.

THE THIRD PERIOD: The third period started with another bench minor given to
BU. It was not announced why, but, again, it was likely for BU not being
ready to start the period on time. This resulted in 3-on-3 play to start
the period, and which was extended when Lowell received another penalty when
Jeff Daw was called for slashing just 24 seconds into the period. Then 6
seconds after BU got one man back Doug Wood was called for holding,
returning play to 3-on-3. No more penalties were called and both teams
finally were at full strength at 3:12 of the period. At this point the
River Hawks once again took control of the game and applied pressure in the
BU zone, which resulted in a goal 27 seconds later, as Eric Brown got hard
shot on net from just inside the right face-off circle. Noble made a great
toe save, but the rebound went into the slot to an uncovered Neil Donovan,
who buried the puck in the net.

Lowell kept the pressure on BU and the Terriers were unable to get control
of the game and relieve it. The River Hawk pressure resulted in another
goal at 9 minutes even, as Mike Nicholishen scored his second goal of the
game, as he lifted the puck over Noble's shoulder from inside the right
face-off circle. The River Hawks got their sixth goal just 3:15 later, when
both teams were skating 4-on-4. The Terriers dumped the puck into the
Lowell zone, but were unable to get to it. Brendan Concannon got the puck
along the right boards at the face-off circle and made a long pass to Greg
Bullock, who was floating at the BU blueline. Bullock skated down into the
slot and lifted the puck over Noble' glove into the net.

The River Hawks had closed the gap to just two goals, but the BU settles
down and played solid defense for the final 7:45 of the game. When Lowell
did get shots on net Noble was there to make the save. With time running
out Crowder pulled Lindsay at the one minute mark, but Lowell was unable to
maintain control of the puck in the BU zone. Shane Johnson got the puck and
passed it to Mike Prendergast, who skated out of the BU zone and put the
puck into the empty net from the Lowell blueline to seal the victory. As
Prendergast skated out of the BU zone a Lowell player behind the play threw
his stick at Mike's skates in an attempted to trip him, but it failed. Even
if it had worked it was a stupid and pointless action, since, according to
Bob Kurtz, it would have resulted in an automatic goal.

OBSERVATIONS: BU's special team play continues to improve. The went 4-for-8
on the powerplay, 4-of-5, and four straight. The last three powerplays were
15, 6 and 33 seconds long, so the Terriers really did not have any
opportunities to setup on them. This is good news, because the BU powerplay
has been struggling lately, going 3 for 25 in there four previous games, a
poor .120 success rate. Included in that stretch is a poor 2 for 12
performance against UMass Amherst.

On penalty killing BU was 7 for 7, two which were abbreviated Lowell
chances. Since the 21 Jan game versus BC, the Terriers have killed 27 of 29
penalties for a .933 success rate. This is good news and it is a sign that
BU's defense and goaltending is improving when it is most important. The
Terriers did appear to be outplayed by the River Hawks during the 4-on-4 and
3-on-3 play, so BU needs to work on that aspect of the game.

The River Hawks looked much better than their record over the last 6 games
and it looked like they might be able to beat the Terriers in this game.
They outplayed BU for two periods, but a poor second period and horrendous
penalty killing did them in. Their offense woke up and scored 6 six goals,
most the result of good, hard work. Lowell also played well on defense at
even strength, but their penalty killing was very poor and needs a lot of
work. In goal neither goalie looked impressive, but Craig Lindsay appeared
to be the better goalie.

COMING UP NEXT: The Terriers face Boston College in the Beanpot final Monday
night in the Garden. The Terriers will have to stay focused, play well, and
not take the win for granted, or the Eagles might be able to surprise them.
Then the stretch run to the playoffs starts, with a game at Providence
Friday and at home versus the Friars Saturday. After playinh UNH Saturday
night Lowell has a home-and-home series with Umass Amherst next weekend.
