One thing that I forgot to update in the pre-Yule update that I posted yesterday
was the tiebreaker. For those who may have forgotten, the tiebreaker was the
sum of the conference points of Providence, Vermont, UIC, and SCSU. Since I
set it up before HE's new point system went into effect, Providence's points
are based on 2 for a win (either regulation or shootout) and 1 for a shootout
loss. That having been said, here is the breakdown of the current status of
the tiebreaker and a projection of what it will be at season's end:

School Current Record Points Games Left
                _____________________________________________________
                PC 3-5-3-1 10 13
                UVM 2-2-0 4 18
                UIC 4-3-2 10 18
                SCSU 6-8-0 12 18
                                                  __ __
                                                  36 67

So if all four teams played .500 hockey the rest of the way, the tiebreaker
would be 103, which is pretty close to the average guess of 97.

Now, for the setup of the Conference Tournament Contest, which will be held the
first half of March. For those who had been paying attention recently, we have
pretty much determined what the pairings and such would be in each of the conf.
tournaments would be, as regards to who plays who, if the teams are reseeded at
any time and when, etc. That having been determined, it was up to me to set
the point values for each game. I went into it with two criteria:
        a) all conferences would be weighed equally, i. e. the total number of
points for each conference tournament would be the same
        b) the first-round 3-game series (or the quarterfinal games in HE) would have the same point value throughout all four conferences, as well
as having the four championship games have the same value.

Fortunately, I was able to do that. Each conference tournament will be worth
a grand total of 40 points, which gives 80 points per region of the country, and160 points overall. (As I stated earlier, we will have a champion for each
conference, a champion for each region of the country, and an overall champion.(
The breakdown for each conference:

Hockey East: First round (8 vs. 9) 2 pts. x 1 = 2
                  Quarterfinals 3 pts. x 4 = 12
                  Semifinals 6 pts. x 2 = 12
                  Championship 9 pts. x 1 = 9
                  Consolation 5 pts. x 1 = 5
                                                           __
                                                           40

ECAC: First round (7-10, 8-9) 2 pts. x 2 = 4
                  Quarterfinals 3 pts. x 4 = 12
(These will be 2 pts. for the winner and 1 pt. for
the length of the series. ECAC quarterfinal series
are played as two regular-length games with no OT,
with the normal point assignments (W2, T1, L0). Only
if the two teams have two points each will a third,
                         sudden-death OT game be played.)
                  Semifinals 5 pts. x 2 = 10
                  Championship 9 pts. x 1 = 9
                  Consolation 5 pts. x 1 = 5
                                                           __
                                                           40

CCHA: Preliminary (UAF at 10) 2 pts. x 1 = 2
                  First round 3 pts. x 5 = 15
(These will be 2 pts. for the winner and 1 pt. for
the length of the series. CCHA first-round series
are best-of-3, with sudden-death OT in all three
                         games, if necessary.)
                  Quarterfinal (5 at 4) 4 pts. x 1 = 4
                  Semifinals 5 pts. x 2 = 10
                  Championship 9 pts. x 1 = 9
                                                           __
                                                           40

WCHA: First round 3 pts. x 5 = 15
(These will be 2 pts. for the winner and 1 pt. for
the length of the series. WCHA first-round series
are best-of-3, with sudden-death OT in all three
                         games, if necessary.)
                  Quarterfinal (5 vs. 4) 3 pts. x 1 = 3
                  Semifinals 4 pts. x 2 = 8
                  Championship 9 pts. x 1 = 9
                  Consolation 5 pts. x 1 = 5
                                                           __
                                                           40

The Eastern total will be the combined points of the HE and ECAC tournaments,
while the Western will be that of CCHA and WCHA tournaments.

Of course, if you have a contest, you need a tiebreaker. (And I've always had
some weird ones.) So, here goes. For each of the conference tournaments, the
tiebreaker will be the total of the number of goals scored in the two semifinal
games and the championship game (using this since the beloved CCHA has no con-
solation game). For the national contest, the tiebreaker will be a bit more
complex. The tiebreaker will be the identity of the 12 NC$$ Tournament par-
ticipants, with the following point value assigned:
2 points for getting the team right
1 point for their correct regional
2 points for their correct seeding
So, if you predict that CC will be the West #1 seed and they are, it's worth 5
points. If you predict them to be the West #3 and they're the East #3, it's
worth 4 points. If you predict them to be the West #3 and they're the West #4,
it's worth 3 points. If you predict them to be the West #3 and they're the
East #5, it's worth 2 points. Finally, if they don't make the tournament, you
get 0. (I went through this so it would be clear what I'm asking for.)

I have yet to decide on my West and East tiebreakers. If anybody has any ideas, please E-mail me. DO NOT POST THEM TO THE LIST. I'm sure Wayne doesn't want
them rolling around in the archives.

Finally, since it is the holiday season, I will be heading out-of-town tomorrow
and won't be back until January 5. I'll probably sign off the list at the end
of the day, so this will be my last post for 1994. (Gee, I wonder what that
huge sigh of relief out there was for. :-)) So, to all who I've come in con-
tact with through Hockey-L, may you all have a very Merry Christmas (may their
be hockey sticks, goalie masks, and team jerseys, as well as NC$$ Tournament
tickets, under all your trees) and have a very wonderful 1995. May your teams
enjoy great success during the Holiday Tournament season (note this does NOT
apply to those of you who cheer for Michigan Tech, Michigan, or Cornell :-)).
