HUSKIES HOST WISCONSIN AFTER SWEEPING NMU
This Week: The Michigan Technological University hockey team will host the
University of Wisconsin Badgers in a two-game Western Collegiate Hockey
Association series this weekend. Friday's (Nov. 11) game is set for 7:35
p.m., while Saturday's (Nov. 12) rematch will begin at 7:05 p.m. Both
contests will be staged in the MacInnes Student Ice Arena (4,200).
The Broadcast: All Michigan Tech games can be heard live on WZRK radio,
93.5 FM. Bob Olson, the dean of broadcasters in the Western Collegiate
Hockey Association, is in his 24th season as the voice of the Huskies.
Volunteer assistant coach Darcy Way is back for his fifth year providing
color commentary.
The Records: MTU is 5-1-1 on the season and 3-1-0 in the WCHA after
sweeping Northern Michigan last weekend. Wisconsin, which gained one point
in a home series with Minnesota-Duluth last weekend, is 3-3-1 both overall
and in the WCHA.
The Coaches: Bob Mancini (Colorado College, 1982) is in his third year
behind the bench at MTU. He owns a 35-43-11 record at the school and in
five years as a college head coach sports a 71-75-23 mark. Jeff Sauer
(Colorado College, 1965) is in his 13th season as head coach at Wisconsin.
He owns a 236-177-24 mark at UW and in 23-plus seasons as a college head
coach, Sauer has a record of 492-403-35.
The Series: Michigan Tech and Wisconsin will meet for the 96th and 97th
times ever this weekend. In the all-time series, which dates back to the
1927-28 season, the Badgers have a 53-36-6 advantage.
Coach Mancini on the UW Series: "Wisconsin is a much better team than
where they were picked in the preseason poll. Daubenspeck has been playing
well in goal and although they don't have a lot of "name" players, they
appear to me to be playing very well as a team."
Coach Mancini on the NMU Series: "Needless to say, I was very pleased
with the way we played last weekend. It was a team effort and every single
player made a major contribution. Our specialty teams were outstanding and
were a major factor in both games."

About Wisconsin: The Badgers are led offensively by junior winger Max
Williams. In the first seven games, the Mahwah, N.J., native has 5-5--10.
Other top Badger point getters include senior defenseman Maco Balkovec
(0-7--7), senior wing and alternate captain Jamie Spencer (3-3--6), junior
wing Shawn Carter (3-2--5), and sophomore wing Dan Tompkins (1-4--5). In
goal, sophomore Kirk Daubenspeck has played all but 6:15 of the first seven
games. The Madison, Wis., native is 3-3-1, with a 3.16 goals against
average and an .897 saves percentage. The Badgers are operating at a 12.2%
clip on the power play (6-49), while allowing opponents to score at a rate
of 21.7% (10-46).

Huskies Hints: The Huskies swept Northern Michigan last weekend, marking
the first time since 1988 that the Huskies have accomplished that feat . .
. MTU is 2-0-1 in its three road games this season. Not since 1973-74 has
an MTU team been undefeated in its first three road affairs . . . At
5-1-1, the Huskies are off to their best start since 1973-74. That year,
MTU was also 5-1-1 after seven games. Incidentally, the Huskies won the
WCHA in 1973-74 with a 20-6-2 mark and finished second in the nation with
an overall record of 28-9-3 . . . Junior center Pat Mikesch (Hancock,
Mich.) needs just one point to become the 54th member of MTU's Century
Club. Mikesch has 32-67--99 in 85 career games . . . MTU was 8-for-17
(.471) on the power play against Northern Michigan last weekend, while
holding the Wildcats to two power play markers in 22 chances (.909 penalty
killing efficiency) . . . MTU set six school penalty records in its 6-2 win
at NMU last Saturday (Nov. 5), including: Most penalties by MTU -- 29; Most
Penalties by the Opponent -- 26; Most Penalties by Both Teams -- 55; Most
Penalty Minutes by MTU -- 77; Most Penalty Minutes by the Opponent -- 71;
Most Penalty Minutes by Both Teams -- 148 . . . MTU and NMU each
established a new WCHA single-period record for penalties last Saturday.
Each team was whistled for 20 penalties in the third period, eclipsing the
old mark of 19 set by Alaska Anchorage at NMU in the third period of a WCHA
Playoff game on March 12, 1994 . . . The 55 total penalties whistled
against MTU and NMU in last Saturday's game tied the North Dakota at
Minnesota game on Oct. 24, 1992, for the number two spot on the league's
ledger for most penalties by two teams in one game . . . The six goals MTU
scored at NMU last Saturday were the most in a WCHA road game for the
Huskies since Jan. 8, 1993, when MTU scored eight times in a one-goal win
over Colorado College . . . Freshman left wing Jason Prokopetz (Esterhazy,
Sask.) was disqualified for fighting during the third period of last
Saturday's game at NMU.

Coaches Corner/Blueline Luncheon: The next Coaches Corner/Blueline Luncheon
will take place Friday (Nov. 11) at 12 noon in the Lake Superior Room of
the Northern Lights Restaurant. MTU hockey coach Bob Mancini, Wisconsin
hockey coach Jeff Sauer, MTU football coach Bernie Anderson, and Huskies
volleyball coach Mary Kaminski are the featured speakers. Cost for the
buffet luncheon is $6.75 per person, which includes tax and tip. Blueline
Club members receive a 50-cent discount.
Up Next: Michigan Tech will begin a four-game WCHA road swing with a
Saturday-Sunday (Nov. 19-20) series at the University of Minnesota.
