Where: System-Wide
When: Aug 07, 2013 0600
Expected Duration: 1/2hr
Scope: UMS Guest Wireless

Summary:
We will be upgrading the software for the UMS-Guest wireless firewall and transitioning to OpenDNS rather than a transparent proxy for web filtering.

This change is being made to address two concerns:

The first being to resolve some protocol issues that affect a handful of sites when passed though a proxy server (mainly dealing with protocol compression headers)

The second is to address the lack of filtering for HTTPS.

OpenDNS filtering is performed using DNS and is the current solution used for servicing the 1,000+ schools and libraries that receive their Internet connectivity through UMS. The NOC is trained on supporting OpenDNS and will be able to create exceptions if any content is getting blocked by mistake.

An effort has been made to mirror the existing filtering policy and end-users should not notice a major change in the service.
