This team will compete at the Tampere Cup in Finland 8/19-22,
and the Epson Cup in Germany 9/3-4. They will also play a
pre-Olympic tournament in Lillehammer in November, and also
compete in the Izvestia tournament in Moscow in December.
In my opinion this is a much better preparation for the
Olympics since they will be playing on the larger ice surfaces,
and against the teams they will be playing against (or somewhat
closer than playing against the NHL teams). They play only
Chicago, Detriot, Hartford, St. Louis, San Jose and Florida
of the NHL. They will also play less college teams (Maine,
Minnesota, BC ...?).
As with last time, they are talking about this team being a base
from which to build (add pros late). Tim Taylor is talking about
speed and skill, which sounds good. To me the bright spot was the
Peter Ciavaglia pick. At Harvard, he was generated offense in the
more unusual ways. I think that will play well against Europeans.
