In a battle of two of the three teams tied for second place in Hockey East,
BU scored four unanswered goals in the third period to break a 2-2 tie
and go on to a 6-2 win at UMass-Lowell. The Terriers are now alone in
second with 10 points, while Lowell and Northeastern remain tied and in
third with 8 points each.

The win was the eighth straight for the Terriers and fourth straight in
HE play. Lowell, meanwhile, has now lost four straight after getting off
to a 10-4-0 start. The Chiefs, oddly, are 0-5-0 at home in HE and 4-0-0
on the road in HE.

The first two periods were pretty evenly played. Lowell led 2-1 after one
on goals by Jon Mahoney and Mike Murray, sandwiched around a goal by BU's
Steve Thornton. Mahoney got the puck high in the slot and rifled it past
BU goalie Scott Cashman, and Murray took a pass, blew by a defender and
walked in to beat Cashman for a very pretty goal. Ken Rausch had the
only score of the second period to tie it for BU. A Lowell defender tried
to shoot the puck away from the slot into the corner, but it deflected
off of Rausch and into the Lowell net.

The difference in the game was the third period where Lowell made mistake
after mistake and BU capitalized, scoring four times on only eight shots.
Thornton scored the eventual winner at 5:03, and then Jay Pandolfo, a
freshman who is BU's second-leading scorer with 7-11--18, made it 4-2
just two minutes later. At 11:32, Lowell was caught in a line change
as Cashman passed the puck to defenseman Chris O'Sullivan who got it
to Doug Friedman for an easy goal. Lowell coach Bruce Crowder was livid
because he thought the play should have been called offsides - perhaps,
but I was amazed that he had called for the change with BU controlling
the puck. David Sacco, who has 10-15--25, completed the scoring at
17:46 when he was allowed to take the puck from the behind the net, walk
in front and stuff it. Roloson may have not looked good in stopping
only four of eight shots in the period, but in his defense, well, he
had no defense.

POSTGAME
The Chiefs looked really awful in the third and have not been playing well
lately. It will be interesting to see how they do at Anchorage, where
they are 2-2-0 all-time and lost a pair in January 1991. I suspect they
will come out angry this weekend as Crowder will not stand for this type
of play for too long; I think he lost his patience with his team tonight
as he was heard yelling to a player, "Get your head out of your *ss!"

This was the fourth game played by BU freshman Chris O'Sullivan and he
earned his first career point on BU's 5th goal. He is no relation to
fellow defenseman Kevin O'Sullivan although both are from Dorchester, MA.
Chris spent last semester finishing up some high school coursework at
Catholic Memorial, and he enrolled at BU for this semester. He has some
size at 6'2" 187, but seems to need to build up his strength as he was
knocked around a bit. I wouldn't expect great things from him right
away, but he does give BU another body on the blueline and the BU folks
think he will be a good one. Dan Donato was a scratch on defense tonight.

Looking at the Lowell goalie stats, well, it's Roloson and pray for rain
(to borrow from the old Braves Spahn-and-Sain saying). Roloson has
played 1060:40 this year and backup Chris Hagan has only played 4:04.
Even the empty net has seen more action than Lowell's backup, with Lowell
having 5:27 of empty-net time thus far. BTW, since this was brought up
by Chris Craig in the earlier UNH-Lowell game, Hagan is listed at 5'6"
153.

BU will next play at Providence Friday 1/8 and then host the Friars in the
back end of the home-and-home Saturday night at Walter Brown. Lowell
will travel to WCHA affiliate Alaska-Anchorage this weekend for a pair
of nonleague games Friday and Saturday. Lowell's Bob Ellis will not be
doing the games from Anchorage, but WLLH (1400 AM) will be picking up
the broadcast from Anchorage both nights at 11 pm Eastern if anyone needs
a late night hockey fix in the area north of Boston and wants to hear
what the UAA radio broadcast sounds like.
