THIS WEEK'S ACTION for 11/20-21/92:
A schedule of all games involving Division I teams follows at the end.
Thanks to Keith Instone who provided some of the information used below in
the preview of the Western games.
The weekend's big matchup is Maine at Boston University. The teams met
three times last season, each winning one and there was one tie. The
tie came in the last meeting, up at Alfond Arena, when Maine roared out
to a 4-0 lead and had to hold on for a 4-4 tie. BU leads the all-time
series 20-18-1, and since 1989-90, BU is 3-2-0 against Maine at games
played at BU's Walter Brown Arena. The Saturday game will be shown on delay
starting at 10 pm Eastern time by the New England Sports Network. The six
other Hockey East teams will be split into pairs and play home-and-home
sets, with Friday's New Hampshire at Boston College game being also shown
live on NESN at 7 pm. Merrimack-Northeastern and UMass/Lowell-Providence
are the other matchups.
The other big game features the two remaining unbeaten and untied teams in
Division I, Harvard and Yale. Harvard will travel to Princeton Friday
while Yale will host Brown, before the two tangle on Saturday in New
Haven. Harvard and Yale tied twice last season. Elsewhere in the ECAC,
Cornell and Colgate make the North Country trip at Clarkson and St Lawrence,
with Cornell's games being a rematch of the 1992 ECAC semifinal (vs
Clarkson) and the 1992 ECAC championship game (vs SLU). Vermont travels to
RPI and Union, and Dartmouth travels to RPI; the Dartmouth at Union game
will not be played until 1/17/93.
In the WCHA, first-place Denver gets a test when the Pioneers host
Minnesota for a pair. The teams split their four game regular season series
last year. Other WCHA matchups are Colorado College at
Wisconsin, Michigan Tech at Minnesota-Duluth, and Northern Michigan at
St Cloud. CC split with Wisconsin last year but only has a .264 all-time
winning percentage against the Badgers. North Dakota also travels to WCHA
affiliate Alaska-Anchorage for a pair; UAA has never beaten North Dakota,
who holds a 7-0-0 record in the all-time series.
The CCHA PASS Game of the Week features third-place Western Michigan
hosting Notre Dame on Saturday at 7 pm, the back half of a home-and-home
between the two. The first- and second-place teams will not be in league
action this weekend; Lake Superior hosts Laurentian of Canada on
Saturday, and Michigan is off. In 2-game matchups, Miami will attempt to
continue its strong start at Kent, Illinois-Chicago travels to Michigan
State, and Bowling Green and Ohio State play a home-and-home. With the
CCHA's new schedule of three games vs each opponent this year, this will
be the first year since the inception of varsity play at BG in 1969-70
(two years before the start of the CCHA) that BG and OSU do not
play four regular season games against each other, unless they meet in
the Cleveland Tournament. Affiliate Alaska-Fairbanks goes to sunny (and
humid) Huntsville, Alabama for a pair of games at Division II Alabama-
Huntsville. Ferris State is also off, but they will host Lake Superior
in a rare mid-week game on Thanksgiving Eve.
The two Division I Independents will face Division III competition this
weekend. Air Force hosts St Thomas for two games, and Army hosts UMass-
Boston on Saturday.
Looking ahead to next week, there will be three tournaments involving
Division I teams (not on below schedule):
GREAT ALASKA FACE OFF: A three day, round robin tourney beginning on
Thanksgiving Day in Fairbanks, Alaska. Alaska-Fairbanks, Bowling Green,
Maine, and Yale will all play each other once.
DURACELL CLASSIC: Colgate and Lake Superior will play two Canadian
schools, Toronto and York, in this two-day tourney at Toronto.
HOLY CROSS TOURNAMENT: Army and three Division I teams who play Division
III schedules - Holy Cross, UConn, and Canisius - meet in this two-day
tourney at Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass.
