Summary:

It wasn't Union's best effort, but it was enough to beat Yale Friday
night at Achilles. The win lifted Union out of last place (over Yale)
and into a tenth place tie with Dartmouth.

The Dutchmen took a 1-0 lead just 22 seconds into the game on Chris
Albert's 5th goal of the season. Union controlled the play for most
of the period, but Yale scored the only other goal of the first, a
power play goal by Michale Yoshino. The Dutchmen had other chances,
many of them directly resulting from bad play by Yale.

Union got a power play goal on a pileup in front at 6:22 of the
second. Although the Dutchmen outshot Yale 16-5 in the period, Yale
scored twice to take a 1-goal lead into the 3rd. Yale's tying goal at
7:38 was particularly awful, as it was just a dump-in shot from the
blue line. Mike Gallant let the puck under his stick and between his
legs, and it slowly slid into the net. Yale's go-ahead goal was also
a bit soft.

The Dutchmen tied the game quickly in the 3rd period when Jeff
Jiampetti poked in a loose puck off the right post and in. The
Dutchmen took the lead for good on Patrick O'Flaherty's first goal of
the season. The 5th goal came with Union on the power play. Troy
Stevens made a move in front, then sent a perfect pass to Scott Boyd,
who one-timed it into the open net. It was one of Union's prettiest
goals of the season. Yale came back to get within one when Jeff Sorum
snuck in behind the Union defense and beat Gallant with a nice move.
Any hopes Yale had were shot down when they took a too many men on the
ice penalty with just over 2 minutes left.

The Dutchmen were clearly the better team in this game, but they just
couldn't put the Bulldogs away. An effort like the one against RPI
last Saturday could have made this a big win. Yale couldn't connect
on any passes, and often seemed confused. The 37-23 shot advantage is
very unusual for Union. Despite 32 saves, Yale's Todd Sullivan was
not impressive. He had a bad tendency to wander too far from his net,
although the Dutchmen couldn't capitalize. Gallant didn't play one of
his better games, either. Another thing that stood out in this game
was the number of times the net behind Sullivan came loose. At least
3 times, all of which were good Union scoring chances, the net was
knocked off either by Sullivan or a Yale defenseman. The referees
never called anything on it. Can a penalty be called if the net is
knocked off intentionally? I seem to remember Yale doing the same
thing last year.

The Dutchmen now have a record of 2-7-1 in the ECAC, 6-7-2 overall.
The win put the Dutchmen in a tie for 10th place (final playoff
position in the ECAC). This is pending the results of Yale and
Dartmouth on Saturday night. Union will travel to Dartmouth and
Vermont next weekend.
