Some notes on the goings-on at Starr Rink:

Colgate 5, Cornell 4
Except for a crucial five and a half minute stretch at the beginning of
the second period, Cornell outplayed Colgate in this one, but during
that "down time", Colgate scored three times and rode that outburst to
victory. The Red Raiders also played better in this game than they had
three nights earlier at Lynah Rink. Their passing was much crisper and
they seemed to have a higher level of intensity. As for the offici-
ating -- well, I am not a Marty McDonough fan to begin with, and there
were parts of this game that reminded me why. In general, I think he
lets a bit too much go, and Saturday afternoon was no exception. In
particular, there were at least two instances when a Colgate player
punched a Cornell player in the head, in what appeared to be full view
of the officials, and nothing was called. From the reactions of the
rather vociferous Colgate fan a few seats to my left, I would gather
there were similar non-calls against Cornell also. Cornell-Colgate is
a pretty heated rivalry, and this is not a game you want the officials
to lose control of. Fortunately, nothing really awful happened, except
     on the scoreboard :-(

Early on, it looked like Cornell would have no problem extending its
five-game winning streak, as the Big Red lit the lamp just 39 seconds
into the first period. Jim McPhee intercepted a bad Colgate clearing
pass at the blue line and fed Ryan Hughes on the right side, who took a
shot that linemate Jason Vogel deflected over goalie Ken Baker's
shoulder. Colgate was playing a little bit shakily in the first
period; about six minutes in, they had a 3-on-2, or potentially a
4-on-2, opportunity developing, but they messed it up with some sloppy
passing. However, the Red Raiders pulled together during the game's
first power play (a 4-on-3), and they tied the game up on Sam Raffoul's
goal at the 7:56 mark. Dale Band skated behind the Cornell net and let
loose a sharp-angle pass across the crease that found Raffoul camped
out by the right post. All Raffoul had to do was tip the puck into the
empty net, which he did. Band's assist on the play was the 100th of
his career, making him the sixth player in Colgate history to reach
that mark. He would go on to get two more assists in the game to pass
Gerard Waslen for fifth place on the Red Raiders' all-time list.

Though Colgate started playing better as the first period went on,
Cornell was still dominating the action, and the Big Red went ahead
again at 12:53. Shaun Hannah skated deep into the Colgate zone, dug
the puck out, and passed back to Russ Hammond. As he was skating by
the crease, Hammond fired a shot that Baker blocked, but Hammond got
his own rebound and scored from a tough angle to the left of the goal.
Cornell was able to keep the pressure on for most of the rest of the
period -- at one point keeping the puck down at the Colgate end for
almost two minutes -- and it looked like the Big Red would take its
one-goal lead into the locker room. But with under a minute remaining,
Colgate's forechecking forced a giveaway in the Cornell zone, and the
Red Raiders capitalized. Off a scramble in front of the net, Ron
Fogarty made a quick centering pass to Craig deBlois, who slapped the
puck through goaltender Parris Duffus' legs at 19:17.

You could pretty much see the wind go out of the Cornell team's sails
after that goal, and it set the stage for what happened in the second
period. Jason Craig got control of the puck deep in the Colgate zone
and caught the Cornell defense off-guard with a long pass to Dale Band
near the Cornell blue line. Band had just come off the bench during a
Red Raider line change, and this play set him up on with a breakaway
attempt. He made the most of it, beating Duffus between the pads with
1:08 gone in the second. The Big Red didn't have much time to recover
from that when Colgate went up 4-2 at the 3:28 mark. Band skated
toward the net, faked a shot, then passed the puck over to Clayton
Fahey, who fired it under Duffus' leg. Cornell was looking pretty
ragged and disorganized at this point, and the Red Raiders completed
their four-goal run at 5:32 of the second, when Band and Jason Greyer-
biehl combined on a beautiful play. Band beat the Cornell defense down
the right side and connected with Greyerbiehl, who was standing
directly in front of the crease. Greyerbiehl one-timed the puck past
Duffus, and just like that, Colgate was up by three.

A shaken Big Red team spent their time-out after Greyerbiehl's goal,
and backup goaltender Andy Bandurski started loosening up. I thought
for sure that coach Brian McCutcheon was going to pull Duffus out of
the game. Shows you what I know -- Duffus stayed in and played quite
well the rest of the way. The Big Red played better after the time-
out, but the Red Raiders were still skating hard, and Cornell was kept
off the board until late in the second. Intense pressure and aggres-
sive forechecking paid off for the Big Red with 2:13 left, when Phil
Nobel came out from behind the Colgate net and popped a backhander just
     inside the post.

Cornell had several opportunities in the third, including a few shots
off the crossbar, but a shaky Colgate team was able to stand up to the
Big Red's pressure. Baker had some outstanding saves, including one
midway through the third when he just got his knee on a point-blank
shot. The Red Raiders did mount a big flurry with under five minutes
left, during which Duffus had to come up with three big saves on break-
away attempts within 30 seconds. Vogel scored again to bring the Big
Red within one at the 18:19 mark, on a high 40-foot wrister that Baker
got a piece of with his blocker but could not prevent from trickling
into the net. Duffus was pulled for the game's final 49 seconds, but
even though the Big Red had several opportunities (Baker was caught out
of position at least twice), they could not get the equalizer. Baker
stopped 37 shots, while Duffus recorded 27 saves. This was Colgate's
first win over Cornell in their last four meetings.
