BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bowdoin Polar Bears exploded for four consecutive goals
in the final 3:44 of the first period to build a 5-3 lead and then hold on for
a thrilling 6-5 victory over defending ECAC East Champion Middlebury in ice
hockey action Friday night in Dayton Arena. Bowdoin improved to 6-4 overall
(5-3 in ECAC East), while Middlebury dropped to 7-4 overall (6-4 in league
play.)
After spotting the visitors a 3-1 lead in the first period, Bowdoin went
on a tear. Chris Delaney got things started at 16:16 with a rebound goal after
Jeff Caro hit the post. Just 35 seconds later, Torey Lomenda one-timed a
beautiful cross-ice feed from Tim O'Sullivan that cleanly beat Middlebury
goalie Brent Truchon for a 3-3 tie. With 45 seconds remaining in the period,
Bowdoin grabbed its first lead when Charlie Gaffney stole the puck from a
Middlebury defender and beat Truchon unassisted. Not wanting to be shown up
by his brother, Joe Gaffney scored just 15 seconds later to cap the rally.
After Middlebury closed to within 5-4, Chris Delaney added an insurance
goal, his second of the game, at 16:19 of the second period. Darren Hersh
made 29 saves for Bowdoin, including a crucial stop in the final seconds as
the visitors pulled their goaltender for an extra skater.
