For the second time in as many nights, the BGSU Falcons dominated the UAF
Nanooks in a contest of Speed and Special Teams. Once again, there was little
doubt that the Falcons owned the ice, but credit is certainly due to Brian Fish
for playing an outstanding game in goal and keeping the game from becoming a
major rout.

Bowling Green led things off at 6:09 in the first period with a goal coming 1
second after the Nanooks come back to full strength. Holzinger heading for the
net backfeeds the puck to the point, and a waiting Kelly Perrault sends a low
shot straight in. BGSU was to make it 2-0 at 10:26, again just seconds after
the Nanooks return to full strength. UAF never clears the zone, and another
shot by Perrault from the same spot gets deflected in by Tom Glantz. BG's
third goal was to be what was the theme for the weekend - a shorthanded goal.
A bad bounce mid-ice off of an UAF player comes back to Curtis Fry who is
already a step ahead of the nearest defenseman. With 1 second remaining on the
power play, Fry scores unassisted. The period ended BG up 3-0.

The beginning of the second period saw the only momentum Fairbanks ever got.
At 2:19, down a man, UAF was to score a shorthanded goal of their own from
Forrest Gore. Still playing hard from the previous goal, Fish comes up with a
big save, stopping Mike Johnson on a huge breakaway. It looked as if the
Nanooks might get something going at that point. Indeed it took until 18:35 of
that period before BGSU could answer back when Holzinger attempts a pass ahead
which gets deflected back to him, and on the "rebound" he shoots and puts it
away. The period ended 4-1, and while UAF turned up the shots in the final
period, they were not to light the light again this night.

At 6:09 in the third period, BG was to score their 2nd shorthanded goal of the
night (and their 5th of the weekend - YES, I did say the 5th of the weekend!).
This time the shot was off of the stick of Brett Punchard - who amazingly
enough was robbed of a breakaway chance late in the second period by Fish. He
was not to be denied a second time, however, and Hall's backhand from deep in
the zone hits him at center ice and with no one in sight, he buries it high
right. Fish was the spoiler of the night to be sure, and at 7:48 denies Dave
Faulkner of his breakaway chance as he slid from left to right. The final goal
of the game came just as a 4 on 4 ended from the stick of Mike Hall at 19:04.
The game ended 6-1.

This series provided more breakaway and shorthanded chances than any I can
remember in the years I have been following hockey. And while both teams'
powerplays provided few thrills, and oftentimes the defenses looked weak, the
overall effect was some exciting scoring opportunities to watch.

After an absence in net for some time, Petrie looked solid last night and
Clarke looked continually good for BG tonight - things look good in goal
heading into the stretch.

****Hobey Baker Watch****

Brian Holzinger added One goal and Two assist tonight (3 Goals (1 SH) and 2
Assists on the weekend) to his leading point totals. He skated around the UAF
team and had an impressive weekend. Already signs at the Ice Arena are
prompting the powers-that-be to expand the trophy case!
