Summary:
Union moved itself into a 9th place tie in the ECAC with a 5-3 win
over Dartmouth. It wasn't the prettiest or most exciting hockey game,
but they got the job done.
The Dutchmen came out and scored quickly on Dartmouth goalie Ben
Heller, on a goal by Troy Stevens just 43 seconds in. Dartmouth came
right back to tie with a goal at 1:16. The Big Green took a very
brief lead at 9:59, but could only hold it for 9 seconds before Chris
Albert tied it at 2 for Union. Senior captain Jeff Jiampetti added a
late goal to give Union a 3-2 lead after 1.
Both teams played a pretty sloppy and honestly quite boring second
period. Jay Prentice scored the only goal of the period at 10:11.
The Dutchmen spent most of the 3rd period killing off penalties.
Dartmouth only scored once on their 4 power play chances, but all that
time a man down kept the Dutchmen from even getting a shot on goal
until over 15 minutes had gone by in the period. When Union finally
was able to stay out of the box for a few minutes, Prentice scored
once again to extend the lead to 2. Dartmouth just rolled over in the
last few minutes and let Union run the clock out.
With 16 seconds left, a fight broke out between Union's Chris Hancock
and Dartmouth's Darren Wercinski. Both players were really going at
it, both without gloves, and Hancock without his helmet. I can't say
for sure how it started, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if it was
Hancock. He is, after all, the one who picked a fight in Union's
Garnet and White game last season... Hancock was given a major and a
minor, and Wercinski a major. No misconducts were given out, but
there should have been. The linesman was thrown to the ice once
trying to break it up. If the league does not suspend Hancock, then
Coach Delventhal should. This was easily the most violent fight at
Achilles since Rick Burchill dropped the gloves late in a game 2 or 3
years back.
The win gives Union a 3-game unbeaten streak (2-0-1), their longest
since joining the ECAC. This also marks the first time they have
swept the season series against an opponent, and the first time they
have earned 3 points in an ECAC weekend series. Their 12 points in
league play (5-9-2) is good enough for a 9th-place tie with SLU, and
puts the Dutchmen just one point behind Cornell and Princeton, who are
tied for 7th. The 7th and 8th place teams host preliminary round
playoff games in the ECAC's. The Dutchmen are also back up to .500
overall (9-9-3).
Union's schedule (which I think I got wrong in the last posting) sends
them to Yale and Princeton next weekend. It will be a big weekend, as
a win over Yale would go a long way toward assuring Union a playoff
spot, and they could catch or pass Princeton in the standings with a
win there. The following week, the Dutchmen will have a tough road
trip to Harvard and Brown, then will finish up at home against Colgate
and Cornell.
