While Cal Ingraham sits out a 14-game suspension for playing when
he was ineligible two years ago, University of Maine officials and
the NCAA are investigating the eligibility of another hockey play-
er.
 
It was reported in The Maine Campus today that Jeff Tory, a fresh-
man defender, may have violated NCAA rules by playing in Maine's
first two games of the season.
 
Chad Finn, sports editor of The Campus, reported an anonymous
source as saying Tory's high school transcript may have been mis-
interpreted by UMaine officials. Tory, the source said, took sev-
eral courses at his high school in Penticton, B.C., on a pass/
fail basis. UMaine officials interpreted the passing grades to
be C's, instead of C-'s, like other NCAA insitutions interpret
them.
 
Maine head coach Shawn Walsh said the potential error was brought
to Maine's attention by another NCAA school. After examining Tory's
transcript, Maine turned to the Hockey East office. Interim HE
commissioner Bob DeGregorio could not be reached for comment by
The Campus, and HE Assistant Commissioner Nonni Daly said she knew
nothing about the case.
 
Tory appeared in the first two games of the season, at Providence,
and if found ineligible Maine could have to forfeit both games.
Walsh said he doesn't think there will be a problem and hopes to
have Tory in uniform for Saturday's game against Providence, at
Alfond Arena.
