I'm sorry, I don't want this to get ridiculous. An earlier article posted how
those of us at Maine our 'whiners'. This observation was noted by a B.U. fan
during the weekend in which Maine lost its game. Excuse me, but overall the
Maine fans are probably the most supportive in the country. I've seen fans of
Boston teams, Providence, UNH, SLU, LSSU, Minnesota, Miami, etc... Maine fans
have always showed up to cheer, even in the days when Maine meant nothing to
college hockey. I'm not going to say all fans of other schools are poor
sportsmen, but there definately seems to be more 'bad spirits' shall we say
with other fans. Maybe it is because we're in the woods, separated from
civilization, but our behavior seems to be better than most. I recall the
first Hockey East Champianship game Maine won. It was at the Conte Forum at
Boston College against B.C.. Fans for both schools were very spirited. But
it was obvious from the beginning that we were two different breeds of fans.
As the National Anthem was being sung, the B.C. side was yelling and screaming
half way through it. The Maine side was politely and respectively quiet until
it was over. Later, during our M-A-I-N-E---GO BLUE! cheer (by the way we know
what M-A-I-N-E spells, excuse the fact we have imagination and originality),
the B.C.fans started with a classy F-*-C-K---F*CK YOU cheer. Of course we
were in their building, but this was the H.E. champianship so out of 8000 fans,
at least 3000 fans were from Maine, and we were louder. This type of behavior
seems prevalent with other fans, Boston area especially (I can't comment about
Harvard).
We have had our share of setbacks it the big games, but the fans have always
been very supportiveand always there for the team (I know other schools have
been there too for their teams), we have never been or ever will be whiners.
Sooner or later, we will be National Champians, and the longer it may take, the
sweeter it will be.
