INJURIES OF NOTE
BC lost goalie Josh Singewald for at least two weeks with a strained
right knee suffered in the first period of Friday's 5-1 loss to BU.
Singewald has played very well lately and his loss is sure to hurt the
Eagles with two games coming up against Maine.

BU freshman defenseman Chris O'Sullivan, who had just enrolled at BU
a few weeks ago and started playing after Christmas, is lost for the
remainder of the season. O'Sullivan suffered a broken vertebrae in the
second period of last week's 5-5 tie at Providence. According to BU,
O'Sullivan should be ready to play next year. He had played only four
games prior to the game in which he was injured, so I wonder if he can
be redshirted and keep his four years of eligibility. At any rate, the
Terriers' defense, which appeared to be bolstered by the addition of
O'Sullivan, will return to having only six players available.

BU also lost Mike Prendergast for 2-3 weeks with sprained right knee
ligaments, suffered against Providence last Saturday.

THIS WEEKEND
BU was the big winner, sweeping BC and solidifying its hold on 2nd place
while also moving within two points of first-place Maine, although Maine
has two games in hand. The other two home-and-home series in HE play
were split, as UNH and Northeastern each won at the other's rink and
UMass-Lowell and Merrimack each took the home ends of their set.

BU won the HE season series from BC 3-0-0, although the teams will meet
at least one more time this year in the opening round of the Beanpot
Monday, February 1st.

Maine and Providence hosted ECAC foes Clarkson and SLU, each for a pair,
and the North Country teams didn't give a bad account of themselves.
Friday, Maine's Cal Ingraham had to score with 1:39 left to keep his
team unbeaten, while Providence knocked off SLU. SLU earned a split
on the road the next afternoon by pulling out a 6-5 win, while Maine
dominated Clarkson in winning 6-0. All HE teams have now finished their
nonconference games except for BC, BU and NU, each of which has two more
games in the Beanpot. HE teams have gone 50-21-7 (.686) in NC games not
including the one NC game played between two HE teams in which Maine beat
UNH.

NEXT WEEKEND
All eight teams will be involved in league play. Maine returns to HE
play for the first time since Dec 5th, as the Black Bears will play two
at BC. The first game will be Friday night, with Sunday's match at 2 pm
being shown live on NESN. Maine has a chance to tie the HE record for
longest league unbeaten streak in a season at 12 on Sunday. That record
is held by last year's Maine team which was unbeaten in its last 12, so
thus far, Maine is unbeaten in its last 22 league games.

Elsewhere, the action will involve home-and-homes. UNH meets up with
hot BU, unbeaten in its last 12. Merrimack will meet Providence, a team
the last-place Warriors have beaten already this season. And UMass-Lowell
and Northeastern will do battle with fourth place on the line; Friday's
game at UML will be shown live on NESN.

KARIYA STILL TOPS
With a goal and three assists against Clarkson, Maine freshman Paul
Kariya remains the leading scorer in the country. Kariya ran his totals
to 14-39--53 in 18 games, 2.94 pts per game. Teammate Jim Montgomery
also had a goal and three assists, giving him 11-38--49, but Montgomery
has played 24 games. His pts per game stands at 2.04. And their
teammate, Cal Ingraham, is third overall in HE. His 2-2--4 gives him
27-20--47 in 24 games (1.96). Ingraham is the leading goal-scorer in HE.

LADY WALSH?
Not only is Kariya a candidate for HE Player of the Year and the Hobey
Baker, but if there was a college Lady Byng for sportsmanship, he'd
probably win that. Kariya had only six PIM entering the weekend.

DURHAM HUSKIES?
Northeastern is struggling at 8-11-1, 5-7-1 in HE (4th), but the Huskies
seem to have found a new home-away-from home in UNH's Snively Arena. NU
is 3-1-0 this season in Durham, NH, having beaten UNH there 7-5 on
Nov. 28, handled Vermont 7-3 in the first round of the UNH Holiday
Tourney on Dec. 29, and beaten UNH there again this past Saturday, 6-4.
The lone loss came against Dartmouth in the finale of the UNH tourney,
5-4. Unless they get sent there for the playoffs, however, the Huskies'
Snively luck is over since they won't play there again this season.

From last week's HE release dated Jan 11, the players of the week:

HE PLAYER OF THE WEEK 1/11/93
Greg Klym, Sr C, UNH: Klym earned his first career hat trick against
Merrimack and tallied 5-1--6 on the weekend. He now has 103 career
  points.
Honor Roll: Michael Spalla, BC; David Sacco, BU; Dave Pensa, UML; Dino
  Grossi, NU; Brian Ridolfi, PC.

HE ROOKIE OF THE WEEK (tie) 1/11/93
John Charette, Jr LW, PC: Charette, a transfer from CCRI (Community
College of Rhode Island) this season, nothced the first two goals of
his DivI career, one each in a 5-5 tie and 7-2 loss to BU.
Mike Veisor, Fr G, NU: Veisor had an iron man weekend between the
pipes, stopping 31 of 33 shots in a 2-2 tie with BC and 36 of 38
shots in a 4-1 loss to BC (2 goals ENGs).
Honor Roll: Don Chase, BC; Brendan Concannon, UML; Sean Perry, UNH.
