From an article in the Star Tribune today written by Gregor Pinney.

FACULTY BALKS AT TRIP BY 'U' HOCKEY TEAM.

Several key faculty members balked Thursday at letting the Gophers hockey team
play a nonconference series at the University of Alaska-Anchorage in early
December because the date is close to final exam week.

Alaska-Anchorage, which will not become a full member of the WCHA until the
1993-94 season, invited the Gophers to play on Dec. 4-5. Coach Woog was in
 favor of accepting the invitation.

But Saturday, Dec. 5 is a "study day" before finals week, and a game that day
would violate University policy. An exception would have to be granted by the
faculty Senate Committee on Educational Policy.

But at the meeting of another committee Thursday -- The Assembly Committee on
Intercollegiate Athletics, an advisory body -- Dean Robert Stein of the law
school said team members returning on Dec. 6 after a long flight wouldn't
be ready for an exam Monday morning. The Gophers went to Alaska last season
he said, and two consecutive annual trips can't be justified.<And I wonder
what will transpire along these lines when A-A IS a member of the WCHA???>

It was suggessted that the dates be changed to Dec. 2-3, but that was rejected
also, because of all the class time that would be lost the last week of the
quarter. The result of all the discussion might be that the team won't go at
all, said Mark Dienhart, associate men's athletic director.

The committee also voted 8-1 yesterday against a WCHA proposal to keep 20
varsity scholarships instead of cutting to 18 in 1993 as mandated by the NC$$.
It was rejected, apparently because it would work against cost-containment and
gender-equity efforts. Any change would have to be made by the NC$$.
