ENGINEERS WIN 7-1 ON BLACK FRIDAY
Rensselaer wins ECAC home opener over Vermont

The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team got
multiple
points from five different players, including two goals and an an assist
from sophomore forward Kevin Croxton, and the Engineers defeated the
University of Vermont, 7-1, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference
(ECAC) hockey game before 3,156 fans at the Houston Field House in Troy,
N.Y. With the victory, the Engineers, who wore special black jerseys in
the game, improved to 4-3-1 overall and 2-1-0 in the ECAC. The
Catamounts
are now 0-6-2 and 0-3-0.

In a penalty-filled first period that saw Vermont have one five-on-three
advantage and Rensselaer two, the Engineers scored three goals in the
final
six minutes of the frame to take a 3-0 lead into the locker room.
Croxton
scored the first goal at 14:44, with three Catamounts in the box
(including
one on a ten-minute misconduct), on a wrist shot from the left
side. Following another Vermont minor, Valentin saw a pass deflect off a
UVM defenseman and into the back of the net for his first goal of the
season. In the final minute of the period, Engineers senior forward Ben
Barr broke in alone and scored high to the glove side of goaltender
Travis
Russell.

The visitors made it a two-goal game midway through the second period
when
freshman Chris Myers scored his first career goal after he and classmate
Tom Collingham broke in on a two-on-one. Senior Tom Child made a nice
break-out pass to start the play and Myers ripped a wrist shot past
netminder Nathan Marsters. The goal came at 8:37 of the
period. Rensselaer quickly regained a three-goal advantage when freshman
Tommy Green scored from his knees after a scramble in front of the
net. Barr and Vic Pereira assisted the goal, which came at the 11:06
mark. The Engineers then added their fifth goal at 14:02 on Croxton's
second of the night and third of the season, chasing Russell in favor
for
junior Scott Sortal.

Junior Nick Economakos, who set up two goals earlier in the game, pushed
the Engineers lead to 6-1 when he scored on a shorthanded breakaway
midway
through the third period and C.J. Hanafin added the game's final goal
with
under a minute remaining.

In addition to Croxton, Valentin and Economakos, Barr finished with a
goal
and an assist and senior defenseman Scott Basiuk had two assists.
Marsters
finished with 26 saves for the win while Russell (12 saves) took the
loss. Sortal stopped 12 shots in relief.

Rensselaer, which is now 4-1-1 in its last six games, is right back in
action on Saturday night when it will host Dartmouth College in another
ECAC game at the Houston Field House. Vermont will play at Union College
on Saturday. Both games begin at 7pm.
