Mike Ayers (Jr) recorded his 3rd shutout in a row against BU (including
3-0 last regular season game and 1-0 HE championship) in the Northeast
Regionals at the Worcester Centrum on Saturday night to send UNH to the
Frozen Four for the second year in a row. A few under 9000 in attendance.
After Josh Prudden's (Sr) PPG (9th goal of season) at 13:09 in the first
(assists to Preston Callandar (So) and Jim Abbott (Sr), the score remained
1-0 until 9:12 in the third when Patrick Foley (Jr) chipped in his 8th
goal of the season (assists to Justin Aikens (So) and Abbott). BU hit the
crossbar with about 2 minutes left in the first, then killed a UNH 5-3 PP
for over 80 seconds midway through the second. Sean Collins (So) hit the
empty net at 18:55 in the third, for his 21st goal of season, after Sean
Fields (Sr) left for the bench with almost 3 minutes remaining. Both
goalies made many sensational stops throughout the game, and both teams
were even in shots at 27. Lanny Gare (Sr), UNH high scorer with 51 points
this season, went down with a separated shoulder on the first shift of the
game and did not return. Preston Callander moved up to take his place at
LW on the UNH first line with Josh Prudden and Colin Hemingway (Sr). Tough
career ending loss for Fields and six other BU seniors, as the six UNH
seniors get to extend their careers in Buffalo (although I do not know the
seriousness of Gare's injury). UNH will play the BC/Cornell winner from
the East Regionals on the 10th in Buffalo.

Go Cats!
