Union and RPI played to a 1-1 tie tonight in Troy. After two
scoreless periods, Matt Murley gave RPI a 1-0 lead early in the third.
That was quickly answered by Union when Jeff Hutchens got credit for a
goal when a puck went high in the air and landed behind Nathan
Marsters. Both teams had great chances to go ahead the rest of the
way, but both Marsters and Union's Brandon Snee stopped them all.
Both goaltenders finished with over 30 saves.
It was a very entertaining and mostly well-played game. Union's
passing, especially in thr first half of the game, was as crisp as
I've seen this year, and they did a good job of getting in the way of
RPI in the neutral zone. That same effort will win a lot of hockey
games.
Union earns its first ECAC point, at 0-2-1 in the league, 3-4-3
overall. RPI is 1-1-1, 4-4-1. Most of the ECAC has played 5 to 8
league games, so these two have a few extra games later to make up
ground on the pack.
Princeton and Yale visit the Capital District next weekend.
