MEN'S HOCKEY BEATS IONA, 3-1
Engineers outshoot Gaels, 48 to 26, to even record

The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team scored two goals in the third period and the Engineers defeated Iona, 3-1, in a Division I non-league contest before 3,159 fans at the Houston Field House in Troy, NY. RPI improves to 4-4-0 while the Gaels fall to 5-4-1.

Iona jumped out to an early lead when freshman Brent Williams ripped a wrist shot into the upper left corner at the 8:02 mark of the first period. Sophomore defenseman Paul Fisher set up the goal by digging the puck out of the corner and passing it to Williams. The Engineers pulled even with just 54 seconds left in the period when Ryan Shields deflected a Scott Basiuk shot through Iona?s netminder.

Although there were ample opportunities in the second period, the stanza was scoreless. RPI had the bulk of the shots, outshooting the Gaels, 16 to 8.

The third period saw the Engineers move ahead on a power play goal by junior Marc Cavosie. Rensselaer?s leading scorer, Cavosie snapped a shot from the right circle for his sixth goal of the season with Andrew McPherson and Steve Munn earning the assists. Freshman Nick Economakos put the Engineers ahead, 3-1, with the first goal of his collegiate career at the 15:02 mark. Economakos, who was stationed in the left face-off circle, took a pass from Jim Henkel and snapped a shot high to the glove side.

Sophomore netminder Nathan Marsters made 25 saves for Rensselaer while Mike Fraser, a sophomore, stopped 45 shots for the Gaels.

RPI returns to action next Saturday night when they will face Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and area rival Union at the Houston Field House. Iona plays a weekend series at Findlay next Friday and Saturday nights.
