Providence and union play to a 4-4
tie in hockey action

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The Providence College men's hockey team played to a
4-4 tie in men's college hockey action at Union College's Achilles Arena in
Schenectady, N.Y. on Tuesday, November 20. PC sophomore forward Jonathan
Goodwin (Taunton, Mass.) scored the game-tying goal with 5:48 remaining in
the contest to send the game to overtime.
In the first period, Union opened the scoring when Randy Dagenais threw the
puck on the Providence net and it deflected of senior Jeff Hutchins' skate
and past PC goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) and into the PC
goal. The goal was a power-play score and gave Union a 1-0 lead. The Friars
tied the contest at 1-1 when senior Drew Omicioli (West Warwick, R.I.)
converted a feed from freshman defenseman Eric Lundberg (Vernon, Conn.) in
front of the net for his fifth goal of the season.
In the second period, Omicioli gave the Friars a 2-1 lead when he corralled
a pass from freshman Chris Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I.) and deked Union's
goaltender, senior Brandon Snee, out of his crease, and flipped a backhanded
shot into the open net.
In the third period, back-to-back goals by Union game the Dutchmen a
one-goal lead over the Friars. Chaput scored on a feed from a junior
defenseman Shawn Weiman (Marshall, Sask.), to knot the score at 3-3 with
over 16 minutes left in the period. With just over 10 minutes remaining in
regulation, Union's Jason Kean beat Schaefer to put the Dutchmen up by a
goal, 4-3.
Twenty-two second before Kean's goal put Union ahead, sophomore forward
Peter Zingoni (Newtown, Conn.) was called for a five-minutes major penalty
for spearing and a game disqualification, meaning he cannot play in Friday,
November 23rd's game when the Friars host St. Lawrence. Sophomore Jonathan
Goodwin (Taunton, Mass.) served in the penalty box for Zingoni and when the
five minute major penalty expired, Goodwin exited the penalty box just after
PC's Jon DiSalvatore (South Windsor, Conn.) feed senior Peter Fregoe
(Massena, N.Y.), who in turn fed a streaking Goodwin with the puck and the
five-foot-10-inch sophomore swooped in and scored the game-tying goal. In
the remaining 5:38 and through the five minutes of overtime, neither team
could score the goal to win the contest.
In net, PC's Schaefer tied his career-high with 44 saves in the tie.
Schaefer set the career-high on November 9, 2001 in a 3-1 loss to
Northeastern at Schneider Arena.
The Friars return to action on Friday, November 23 at 7:00 p.m. when they
host St. Lawrence at PC's Schneider Arena.
